Video Volunteer Needed

Summary

We are looking to recruit a team of volunteers to support our journalists-in-training as they work to produce their first digital storytelling projects. Are you an experienced video editor? A film-maker with an interest in teaching others? An overall wizard of Windows Movie Maker? Do you have a passion for women-oriented global initiatives?

Background

World Pulse is an action media network devoted to lifting and uniting women's voices to accelerate their impact for the world. With a focus on grassroots women change leaders, our growing web-based platform supports media and empowerment training, the exchange of resources, and the broadcast of member content. World Pulse was founded as a non-profit social media enterprise in Portland, Oregon in 2003. Today a network of 40,000 women are speaking out and connecting through World Pulse.

Voices of Our Future (VOF) is World Pulse’s annual online training program in new media, citizen journalism and empowerment for grassroots women leaders. Since World Pulse launched Voices of Our Future three years ago, nearly two thousand grassroots women leaders have learned to harness the power of technology to broadcast their voices to the world.

VOF targets women in underrepresented regions around the world, tapping into voices that are rarely heard on a global platform. Graduates of the program have become powerful community leaders, parliamentary candidates, and international speakers. They have been published by the BBC, CBC, United Nations Development Program, Panos—and they been nominated for and won prestigious journalism prizes. These brave women are changing the dialogue around issues as diverse as land rights, breast ironing, and girls' education.

Volunteer Position Description

In 2012, we’re launching our first digital storytelling module. A group of video volunteers will work with Sehrish Shaban, our program partner for this learning module, to support the program participants as they plan, edit and distribute 2-3 minute videos and photo slide-shows. For many of these women this project will be their first attempt at creating a digital story, and the Video Volunteer will be a source of support, encouragement and technical advice. This is an un-paid volunteer position; however, we do support academic credit/internships.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist program participants with planning, editing and production of videos and photo-slideshows
  • Work closely with Sehrish Shaban and Voices of Our Future Program team to ensure digital stories are aligned with learning materials, assignment instructions and World Pulse editorial voice
  • Offer insight and lessons learned for improving Digital Storytelling module materials and program outcomes

Basic Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with video production software (Windows Movie Maker, iMovie) (samples may be requested)
  • Experience with, or understanding of technological challenges faced outside of USA, and how to creatively overcome these challenges
  • Interest in global women’s empowerment movement
  • Experience working with non-native English speakers
  • Patience, compassion, flexibility, and a sense of humor
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to project a positive, engaging, and professional online presence
  • Familiarity with Skype

Time Commitment

  • Available from March 16-April 30, approximately 2-5 hours per week
  • Daily access to email and ability to respond to questions rapidly
