Free Weatherization Workshops

It's COLD outside! If you're feeling a lot of drafts in your home (as a renter or an owner) then we can help! Community Energy Project offers free workshops in small-scale weatherization. Participants learn how to use draft-stopping materials such as vinyl storm window kits, door weatherstripping, rope caulk, etc. while also learning how to adjust and maintain basic equipment like your furnace or hot water heater. Workshops are always free. Qualified participants can also receive a conservation kit worth $150. Those who exceed income guidelines can purchase the more unique materials we discuss. The Coalition of Community Health Clinics (CCHC) is a nonprofit network of 13 safety net clinics serving low income and uninsured people in Portland, Oregon. We are currently hiring a Development Manager.

 

 

 

The Development Manager will coordinate efforts to strategically develop and implement health reform solutions that improve the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of health and social services for uninsured and other medically vulnerable populations. The position will coordinate closely with Portland area health care safety net providers. Primary functions will include communications, program development, and fund development. This full time position will report to the CCHC Executive Director.

The The City of Portland Youth Planning Program and the Multnomah Youth Commission is excited to announce that money is now available directly to youth to improve their communities!

 

*2011 YOUTH ACTION GRANTS PROGRAM* A pool of money is available for community-based projects initiated, designed, and run by youth 21 and under. The Youth Action Grants Program will provide grants of up to $1,000 to youth or youth groups who want to take action that makes Our Bill of Rights: Children + Youthand Portland's community vision a reality.

SOLV Stream Team Captain Training: Jan 11, 13, 15

BE A STREAM TEAM CAPTAIN! SOLV’s Team Up for Watershed Health has a program that provides an opportunity for volunteers to become more involved in watershed restoration at the leadership level. Volunteers receive watershed training in return for helping lead volunteer events at Team Up sites.

NW VEG Community Outreach Champion Workshop 1/16

Community outreach is one of the key ways NW VEG educates the public about our classes and events as well as the benefits of a going veg. You are invited to attend a volunteer workshop to learn how to set up and staff the NW VEG table at local fun and educational outreach events and festivals. Volunteering

Volunteer opportunities for adults 55+ living on a modest income-- PAID small hourly stipend!

The Foster Grandparent Program, (A Senior Corps Program) and the local sponsor, Multnomah County Aging and Disability Services, is currently looking for volunteers who are 55+ to be placed in elementary schools, head start programs and child development centers in the community as volunteers for 15-40 hrs/week. Several openings in the NE Portland community, Gresham area, Beaverton area and Clackamas county.

Homework Club Tutor for the SHINE Community School Program

The Homework Club is designed to give students the opportunity to get extra assistance on completing their school work. Participating students are expected to dedicate the full hour to either completing assignments or quiet individual academic pursuits. This is meant to be a focused and structured environment that provides a quiet atmosphere conducive to learning. The mentors and tutors are there to provide one-on-one help to the kids. Volunteers are expected to attend at least one session of Homework Club per week for the duration of the eight-week session in order to build a relationship with your student. With the help and support of two staff members, all mentors and tutors should provide necessary assistance to the students with their basic reading, writing, and math homework.

Mentoring Opportunity

A local non-profit, nConnect, is recruiting volunteers to mentor low income high school students and dislocated workers who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (including accounting) careers.  Volunteers with accounting, architecture, computer science and engineering backgrounds are particularly needed.  Mentoring can take place online, on the phone, and/or via face-to-face meetings.  The commitment is to communicate with a mentee at least once a month for 6 months.  Mentors are needed now through June 2011. This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life by sharing what you know about your profession and the world of work.

Help Friends of Trees plant its 400,000th tree!

To celebrate the new year, Friends of Trees will be planting the 400,000th tree in its 21-year history. Come join us to help make it happen!

 

The special tree will be planted at our I-205 Multi-Use Path planting event, and it will be a native Oregon White Oak. One of our partners in greening the path, the Oregon Department of Transportation, will join us in commemorating the tree’s new home with a plaque.

 

Here are the details for both of our planting events this weekend:

 

* Green Space Initiative: I-205 Multi-Use Path planting (10600 NE Holman Street) in Portland, where we will be planting 130 native trees, including Cascaras, Oregon White Oaks, and Douglas Maples
