About the Organization: Josiah Hill III Clinic’s (JHC) mission is to protect children from environmental hazards and promote community action for healthy homes. We are a grassroots community-based organization that works in collaboration to create healthy and safe homes for Portland Metro Area families. JHC is unique in that we utilize trained volunteers and community leaders to provide environmental health education, blood lead testing, and healthy home check-ups.

 

About the Position: Josiah Hill III Clinic has been awarded a full time ClearCorps AmeriCorps member as our Communications Specialist. The Communications Specialist assists with spreading the word about Josiah Hill III Clinic’s services and the variety of opportunities for community members to become involved with the organization.

 

Job Description

Title: Communications Specialist, ClearCorps member

Reports To: Executive Director

Status: Full time position, 12 month term

Stipend/Education Award: $11,400 living allowance is provided. $4,725 education award upon completion of 12 month term.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Marketing

-Maintain social networking sites facebook and twitter

-Send information on upcoming events to e-calendars, listserves, websites, media outlets, etc

-Create e-newsletter in collaboration with staff

-Develop and maintain e-contact list

-Assist with design of outreach and marketing materials

 

Outreach & Education

-Conduct outreach at school, community, faith based and networking events (i.e. back to school nights, community fairs, etc,) to educate community members about in-home toxins, JHC’s services, and ways to become involved in the organization

-Sign-up community members for in-home environmental checkups

-Support coordination of community events (Healthy Kids Fair, Community Mini-Fairs, workshops, etc.)

-Provide outreach and education in a welcoming, accessible, and culturally appropriate manner

-Maintain spreadsheet of efforts including number of outreach events, number of in-person connections, etc

 

Volunteer Recruitment

- Present information on volunteer opportunities through presentations and tabling at local universities & colleges, associations, businesses, etc

-Tailor recruitment efforts to ensure diverse representation among volunteers engaged with the organization

-Assist in the development of one day group volunteer opportunities

-Provide recognition to volunteers and help organize appreciation events

 

Resource & Fund Development

-assist in leveraging project resources as requested

-attend fundraising events

 

Direct Service

-Assist at project events such as lead testing clinics and in-home healthy homes education as needed

 

The ideal candidate will have the following skills/attributes:

-self starter with strong initiative

-skilled at public speaking

-embraces and enjoys diversity

-comfort and experience with Microsoft office, including publisher

-strong interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written)

-strong organizational and time management skills

-background in communications, public relations, health promotion or related field preferred
