Earth Advantage, Inc. (EAI) seeks a consultant who will master its pre-developed curriculum, deliver it to the first class of participants, and provide feedback to incorporate improvements to the Sustainable Homes Professional program.

EAI has developed the Sustainable Homes Professional course to provide a rigorous curriculum that focuses on the fundamentals of building science and sustainability for the residential real estate market (see Attachment D – General Course Outline). The course is composed of six modules, each two days in length, and combines both classroom and field work. Modules will typically be delivered the last Friday and Saturday of the month beginning in September 2008 and concluding in March 2009. Exceptions include holiday weekends that will need to be rescheduled to meet the needs of the majority of the program participants.

Position Summary I – Course Instructor: The Course Instructor is responsible for the delivery of all SIX MODULES of the Sustainable Homes Professional certification program under the direction of the Earth Advantage Education Department. The instructor will be present for all class and field instruction and is responsible for the success of participants’ learning experience relative to the program objectives and course syllabi. The Course Instructor should be highly knowledgeable about the subject matter of the course curriculum. The instructor will support students’ success by whatever means necessary, appropriate, and available, and he/she will respond promptly to students’ needs. The instructor will actively monitor and track individual student progress, providing mediation and direction as needed.

Position Summary II – Adjunct Instructor (optional): The Adjunct Instructor supports the delivery of one or more modules of the Sustainable Homes Professional program by supplementing the expertise of the Course Instructor, as necessary. If the Course Instructor can demonstrate his/her capability of delivering all of the modules without the need for an Adjust Instructor, then this position need not be included in the consultant’s proposal. Guest speakers are encouraged, if they provide a contribution which adds value to the learning experience of the course participants.

Specific Duties: The Course Instructor and Adjunct Instructor are responsible for the following: •Teaching material from approved curriculum in accordance with assigned course schedule; •Motivating students to actively participate in all aspects of the educational process, including but not limited to online threaded class discussions, outside assignments/projects, research, etc.; •Maintaining online communication with students to assist them in achieving completion objectives; •Responding in a clear and well-expressed manner to student inquiries and EAI staff within two business days by telephone and/or email; •Providing regular, accurate, and timely student-specific assistance, feedback and support to students relative to their performance; •Keeping archives of student work and correspondence, and maintaining and reporting student; •Openly communicating with EAI staff regarding course and student-related problems and concerns; •Being knowledgeable about the job requirements by reading and abiding by the Instructor’s Manual.

Salary / Pay Rate:Outline fully loaded hourly, daily, and weekly rates. Include any differing rates for travel time and discounts for volume. The proposed rate must be your most favorable rate offered.
Required Skills and Abilities:Who May Apply: Prospective Instructors must have experience with green building methods or sustainable design with an emphasis on energy efficient practices. Specifically, EAI is looking for individuals that possess the requisite knowledge to effectively communicate the “whole building approach.” These experts must consider general design and construction, envelope and windows, energy management and controls, lighting, and HVAC and mechanical systems. Examples of individuals that are expected to possess this broad skill set will most likely be designers, architects, building scientists, or mechanical/structural engineers. Professional Attributes: •Ability to generate respect and trust from staff and external constituencies; •High motivation and energy level with demonstrated ability to take initiative; •Maintaining a big picture perspective while not losing sight of the details; •Exceptional critical thinking skills; •Exceptional follow-through and ability to keep stakeholders informed at all times. Special Conditions of Employment: •Course Instructor must provide their own hardware (PC or Mac Computer) and software (including email). Internet service will be provided. Earth Advantage, Inc. is not responsible for the purchase, upgrade, or maintenance of online instructor’s computer or telephone; •Contracted position; •Course Instructor and Adjunct Instructor will conduct their roles in a training facility at EAI’s Portland offices (approximately 40%), in a variety of field conditions during off-site visits (approximately 40%) and in preparation, follow-up, and evaluations of class sessions (approximately 20%).
Qualifications:Minimum Qualifications: •Previous or current classroom teaching experience (or equivalent); •Certification or a bachelors degree within the content area (Masters degree preferred); •Subject matter proficiency and strong command of building science fundamentals; •Excellent interpersonal communications, research, writing, public speaking, and presentation skills; •Demonstrated ability to adhere to goals, timelines, budgets, standards and usage of common project management processes; •Ability to manage program effectiveness and risk with support from the Earth Advantage Education Department; •Ability to manage the prioritization of tasks and resources to meet educational goals; •Demonstrated communication skills between program stakeholders including EAI staff, students, and partners; •Effective documentation skills to manage an information repository, procedures, and controls that support successful delivery of the course; •Ability to perform moderate computer functions. Proficient in using email, managing files, recording and reporting grades electronically, and using computer applications including Word, Excel, internet browsers and web search engines.
