Mission

Neighborhood House brings neighbors together to feed the hungry, house the homeless, and educate young and old. We strengthen community by providing resources to support self-reliance, economic independence and dignity in people of all ages and backgrounds.

Description

Neigborhood House was established more than a century ago (1905) to meet the needs of new immigrants in South Portland. Today Neighborhood House is a leading provider of comprehensive social and support services in Southwest and the greater Portland area. Neighborhood House serves approximately 6,000 mostly low-income children, families, and seniors each year, mobilizing neighbors to help neighbors with the assistance of a wide network of community organizations.

Neighborhood House's programs educate children and parents, feed and house hungry and homeless families, and assist elders so that they can continue to live independently. Services for children and youth include: -Parenting Program/School Readiness Project -Oregon Head Start and Early Head Start Prekindergarten Programs -Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Afterschool Programs at five Southwest and North Portland Schools -Mentoring -Youth Career Exploration Project targeting middle school students from immigrant families, and -Child Care Improvement Project, providing training and resources to child care providers throughout Multnomah County to improve the quality of child care and increase the amount of stable and affordable child care available to low-income families.

Services for families and seniors include: -Aging Services and our SW and Downtown Senior Centers provide services that help seniors remain living independently longer. -Community Services, serving families facing hunger and homelessness through our Emergency Food Box Program and Turning Point, a transitional housing program for homeless families.
