SOLVE is seeking a highly organized individual who possesses strong critical-thinking, problem-solving, data-entry, writing, editing, interpersonal-communication, Word, and Excel skills.

Summary of Position and Responsibilities

The Staff Accountant is an integral part of the Finance Team, providing leadership and support for SOLVE’s financial systems, financial reporting, and finance team members. The Accountant is responsible for maintenance of the organizations financial records in a current status and prepares various financial reports for both management and the Board of Directors. This position is a full-time, exempt position based in Portland.

Specific Primary Tasks Include

Maintain in current status the general ledger of the organization including the various restricted and unrestricted fund accounts.

  • Record daily cash transactions as well as oversee and manage posting transactions effecting accounts payable, accounts receivable, contributions receivable, restricted and unrestricted funds and payroll.
  • Organize and prepare monthly closing process, including monthly accruals and cutoffs to insure financial records and month-end reports are reflective of all financial activity through the report date.
  • Develop, interpret, and implement financial and accounting concepts, or techniques for financial planning and internal control.
  • Prepare all financial reports as requested for annual audit and assist audit staff for maximum efficiency.
  • Maintain and/or recommend changes to chart of accounts to insure efficient and timely financial reporting.
  • Work directly with Program and Development staff to determine and provide project budgets and financial reporting.
  • Identify applicable laws and regulations and ensure government and contract regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare operating and capital budget for presentation to Board of Directors.
  • Analyze data, provide financial information, and assist in leadership decisions for the organization.
  • Supervise administrative staff and perform written performance evaluations.
  • Oversee Operational Procedures including Insurance and vehicle maintenance.
  • Develop and maintain written procedures for fiscal operations.
  • Assist with human resource activities.
  • Serve as staff to Board Audit & Finance Committee.
  • Other activities as directed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and five years’ experience in financial management, or equivalent experience in the field. Nonprofit accounting experience preferred. Must understand fund accounting concepts.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with financial software, MS Office, and relational database software. Experience with Financial Edge preferred
  • Strong organizational ability and keen attention to detail
  • Clear and effective written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to follow through with commitments in an organized manner and meet deadlines
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment
