Four Prominent Legislators Assess the Session: 2009 Legislative Wrap-Up Part One

Oregon’s 75th legislative session, held amid the worst economic recession in decades, recently came to a close. On July 31, City Club of Portland welcomes Speaker of the House Dave Hunt, Senator Margaret Carter, Co-Chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on Ways & Means, Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli and Senate President Peter Courtney who will discuss both the accomplishments and failures of the session.

Oregon Speaker of the House Dave Hunt, who represents Clackamas County’s District 40, will review key initiatives regarding transportation infrastructure, health care reform, renewable energy and job creation. Portland’s District 22 Senator Margaret Carter, Co-Chair of the Joint Legislative Committee on Ways & Means, will outline how the Legislature crafted a combination of budget cuts and new revenue sources to balance the state budget. Senate Republican Leader Ted Ferrioli, of Eastern and Central Oregon’s Senate District 30, will address the Republican role and reflect on how the results of the session affect small businesses and taxpayers. Finally, Senate President Peter Courtney, from the Salem-area Senate District 11, will discuss his own thoughts on the difficult decisions legislators faced this session.
