Mushroom hunting classes

The Arctos School of Herbal and Botanical Studies has a bounty of mushrooming classes this month!  Our sliding scale is always available to those who are non-profit workers or folks on limited incomes.

Mama/Papa and Babe Mushroom Outing    with Missy Rohs Tuesday, October 6, 10am-4pm    By special request, this excursion is geared towards parents with little ones.  The day is a little shorter, and we won't be away from the car for more than an hour and a half at a time.  This parent- and baby-friendly hunt will focus on delicious edible mushrooms like Chanterelles and Matsutake.  Our hope is that we'll not only find an array of beautiful fungi, but score a big basketful to take home and savor!  Bring sturdy hiking shoes, water, and lunch. Carpool will meet in SE Portland.  Register by Oct. 3rd by emailing missy-at-arctosschool.org. Cost:  $35 per adult (sliding scale available) -- kids under 10 are free!

Camping Trip:  Forage & Cook with Mushrooms    with Missy Rohs & David Beer Friday & Saturday, October 16-17    The hunt is on!  We’ll go out searching for edible mushrooms, learning key identification strategies, and then get a live demonstration in gourmet cooking.  The fruits of our labors will be transformed into a scrumptious feast by professional cook and fungophile David Beer.  Along the way, there will be ample opportunity to learn about native medicinal plants... and if we’re lucky, we’ll each go home with our own fungal cache! For more information, email missy-at-arctosschool.org. Cost:  $110 includes instruction, any camping fees, and a gourmet dinner!  Early-bird discount:  $99 if paid in full before October 5.

Mushrooms & Medicinals    with Missy Rohs Tuesday, October 20th, 9am-5pm    Each autumn, a spectacular array of fungi unfolds before us.  Join us in a hunt for delicious edible mushrooms like Chanterelles, Yellowfoots, and Hedgehogs, as well as an exploration of the medicinal plants like Red Cedar and Salal that abound in the same habitat.  Bring sturdy hiking shoes, water, and lunch. Carpool will meet in SE Portland.  Register by Oct. 17th by emailing missy-at-arctosschool.org. Cost:  $35 (sliding scale available)

Last Tuesday: A Hunt for Mushrooms    with Gradey Proctor Tuesday, October 27th, 9am-5pm Playing in the rain beneath giant conifers while seeking out edible and medicinal delights is what this day is all about.  Hopefully, Chanterelles and Lobsters will be gracing our presence.  On top of that, we’ll see lots of great medicinals, from Oregon Grape to Usnea.  Bring sturdy hiking shoes, water, and lunch. Carpool will meet in SE Portland.  Register by Oct. 24th by emailing info-at-arctosschool.org, or by phoning 503.234.8996. Cost:  $35 (sliding scale available)
