The AmeriCorps Community Engagement Specialist will work with the Madison High School’s Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) program, run by IRCO, to improve the lives of children, their families and the community through partnering with local school communities to extend the school day and develop schools as "community centers" in their neighborhoods. This positions aim is to increase involvement of families, students and the greater community in SUN. The AmeriCorps Member will also be responsible for recruiting volunteers and soliciting donations, both cash and in-kind, that will allow the SUN program to grow and more holistically serve our community. Most duties are applicable to the summer AmeriCorps position, but some will only be performed by a year-round Member, which is pending approval. Typical duties include:

* -Serve as instructor for Summer Programs and chaperone for fieldtrips and events, * -Responsible in sharing success with general community and finding ways to integrate local businesses and partners into summer programming in ways that will last into the school year. * -Outreach and recruit to traditionally underserved children/youth students and coordinate efforts to communicate with parents and inform them of the program and application process, * -Assist in creating and or facilitating further relationships between feeder schools and finding ways to connect students with extended day classes and clubs during the school year. * -Outreach to families to volunteer/get involved in SUN, to local businesses to donate/get involved in SUN, * -Create adult programming and work with Site Manager to staff classes; Teach adult and/or youth classes, * -Create partnerships with local businesses, community organizations and local service providers, * -Organize events & gatherings (e.g. family nights, registration events, cultural celebrations, showcase events), * -Conduct a family/community needs assessment survey, * -Refer families to other community resources, SUN Service System resources/programs * -Work with Site Manager to design, implement volunteer recruitment strategy and recruitment timeline, * -Track volunteer information and activities in volunteer database, * -Attend AmeriCorps-sponsored orientation, trainings and meetings and complete and submit all AmeriCorps timesheets, paperwork and reports and * -Data collection and database maintenance.

Salary / Pay Rate:Americorp Stipend ($840/m) plus Educational Award
Required Skills and Abilities:KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED OF THE POSITION: Knowledge: Knowledge of program implementation practices, partnership development processes, student behavior management, program logistics methods, Portland Public Schools (PPS) facilities use policies, PPS food program requirements, outreach methods and data management practices and requirements within the SUN Service System. Skills: Strong writing skills. Skill in the use of a personal computer and Microsoft Office or comparable word processing and database software. Skill in the use of standard office machines and database programs. Abilities: Ability to work with multi-cultural staff in a team setting. Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with funding sources and partner agencies. Ability to prioritize multiple assignments, and to frequently work under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to analyze situations, make appropriate decisions, and use initiative and judgment in completing tasks and responsibilities. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. Ability to effectively communicate with individuals and groups verbally and in writing. Ability to listen for understanding and communicate effectively across cultures. Ability to courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, agency representatives, funders, stakeholders, community members, and others. Ability to work outside of regular business hours as needed.
Qualifications:QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be through the following: * -Able to function in a positive manner in a fast-paced, demanding school environment with at-risk students and parents * -An independent, self-motivated creative individual who enjoys diverse tasks and serving with ethnically diverse groups of students and parents. * -Experience and/or desire to work with school-age children and their parents * -Interest in recruiting, supporting volunteers. * -Strong cross-cultural, organizational and interpersonal communication skills. * -Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality * -Ability to pass both IRCO and Portland Public Schools-administered fingerprint and background checks * -Possess or willing to earn CPR/First Aid Card. * -Fluency in one additional language besides English is beneficial (e.g. Spanish, Vietnamese) * -Willingness to serve on a flexible schedule, including evenings and some weekends. * -Valid drivers license, good driving record and own vehicle. * -Bachelor’s degree preferred. * -Ability to lift 40 pounds. * -Sit, stand, walk, drive and use computer for extended periods of time.
