The Organization... The mission of Wild Salmon Center (WSC) is to identify, understand and protect the best wild salmon ecosystems of the Pacific Rim. WSC devises and implements practical strategies, based on the best science, to protect forever these extraordinary places and their biodiversity. WSC is an $8M international organization with a staff of 30. The home office is located in Portland, Oregon in the Jean Vollum Natural Capital Center.

The Position… The Grant Programs Associate will work closely with the Director of Grant Programs to identify, cultivate and secure grant funds from foundation, corporations and government sources, in active collaboration with the development team, program staff, and partner organizations. To be successful, the person in this position will enjoy working simultaneously on multiple projects in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment, where the abilities to rise to a challenge, show initiative, exercise independent judgment, and maintain focus are essential. Also key to success are strengths in both “big picture” strategic thinking, as well as an exceptional level of attention to detail. This is a new position, envisioned at 20-30 hours per week to start.

Responsibilities… • In collaboration with the Director of Grant Programs, develop and submit high quality grant proposals, budgets and reports (narrative and financial) for Wild Salmon Center’s programs while adhering to deadlines and making efficient use of program staff time. • Identify and research prospective funders, working closely with program directors and managers to understand funding needs and recognize appropriate opportunities. • Research relevant environmental, social and economic issues and keep current with philanthropic and programmatic trends in order to develop compelling proposals. • Maintain accurate and complete electronic files on the Wild Salmon Center server and Raiser’s Edge database, including proposals and reports, prospect information, and contacts with funders, ensuring information accuracy and integrity. • Develop custom database reports using Crystal Reports to facilitate donor prospecting and cultivation. • Assist in supporting Russian partner organizations to independently identify, solicit and secure funds for their programs and meet funding goals through prospect research, grant proposal writing, donor relations and grant management. • Other duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications… • Successful grant proposal writing, grant management and/or program development experience. • A strong understanding of principles and practices of fundraising. • Proven success in simultaneously carrying out multiple tasks and/or projects, while ensuring high performance standards, adherence to deadlines, and attention to detail. • Russian language fluency (spoken and written) strongly preferred. • Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal • Effective team player with a demonstrated collaborative working style. • Proactive, creative, strategic thinker with strong problem-solving and analytical skills. • Willingness to be flexible as new tasks arise, with outstanding ability to organize and prioritize work in order to achieve results. • Computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office software (particularly Word, Excel and Outlook), database management and analysis (experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred), and web-based tools for communication and research. • Enthusiasm for the mission of the Wild Salmon Center and an understanding of environmental issues.

Education… Bachelor’s degree in related field required.

Compensation… Depending on experience.
