Starting in March 2008 we'll be implementing Bicycle Clubs at 8 elementary schools in North, Northeast and Outer SE Portland, and will be partnering with the Safe Routes to Schools program to offer the Pedal Power after school program at 8 additional schools.

Essential Job Function:

The successful candidates for these (8-10) positions will have passion and experience working with diverse and low-income youth, a familiarity with experiential education, an interest in bicycles and a bicycle of their own, and experience in facilitating groups. This is a part-time, seasonal position that will run from late March through July. Spring season program instructors will be well-positioned for work (full-time) during our summer camp season if interested. This is a prime opportunity to gain valuable hands-on, experiential teaching experience in a collaborative, fun environment.

Duties:

Complete a comprehensive instructor training including basic bicycle maintenance, repair, and safety; elements of experiential education; and behavior management.

With a co-instructor and using a well-established curriculum, implement an after-school bicycle safety program for 12-15 youth (ages 9-11) which includes basic flat tire repair, bicycle safety checks, rules of the road, and community rides.

Maintain a safe environment for all students. Complete necessary student surveys (pre/post) and instructor program reports.

Complete administrative duties as needed. Conduct yourself in a professional manner. General Qualifications:

Experience facilitating youth groups. Experience working with low-income and diverse individuals.

General familiarity with experiential education.

Commitment to the concept of sustainability. Ability to ride a bicycle up to 10 miles. Ability to work and interact with volunteers and members of the Community Cycling Center and Portland School District.

Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to work a flexible schedule. Ability to share work space.

Criminal background check required.

Pay scale: $10-11 an hour FTE: 8-20 hours per week
