Weekend Shelter Monitor

The Annie Ross House is hiring a Weekend Shelter Monitor for Friday evening 8pm through Sunday at noon. This is a temporary 6 month position. The position will begin July 4, 2008. The Annie Ross House, a program of Northwest Housing Alternatives, Inc. provides support and housing to families experiencing homelessness.

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Shelter Services Program Director this position is responsible for working with shelter residents to ensure the safety and security of the campus. This includes the Annie Ross House located in Milwaukie, OR and the surrounding transitional housing units.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Observe and verify the completion of household chores by shelter residents each night. • Carry staff cell phone while on shift and respond to calls in a timely manner. • Address resident requests including provision of information and referral, community advocacy, emotional support, and basic immediate needs. • Provide night security checks by touring the shelter and immediate grounds to ensure safety of shelter residents and NHA campus. • Document observations and interactions with shelter residents upon each shift; this includes nightly bed check for monthly billing purposes. • Role model positive communication and conflict resolution techniques as needed. • Communicate to other shelter staff extraordinary incidents in log book such as child abuse, instances of domestic violence, accidents, first aid/CPR emergencies, and calls to 911. • Respond effectively to such emergencies and contact back-up on-call shelter staff or Shelter Services Program Director if needed. • Communicate to Shelter Operations Coordinator regarding any shelter operational issues, lights that need replaced, any repairs, or broken appliances that are identified. • Participate with other shelter staff members in providing a safe, respectful, and clean atmosphere in shelter. • Attend shelter staff meetings twice per month. • Meet regularly with supervisor to plan and prioritize work load. • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Demonstrated abilities to work independently. • Knowledge of community resources and agencies providing social services. • Ability to empower and support program participants in life choices and change. • Demonstrated abilities to proactively problem solve and prioritize duties. • Ability to maintain confidentiality. • A passion for working with families with children. • Basic computer skills and abilities. • Demonstrated ability to work with families from diverse cultural backgrounds. • A combination of life experience and/or education in issues related to poverty, families experiencing homelessness, and government entitlements is required. • Able to successfully pass a criminal background check. • CPR/First Aid certification completed within 3 months of hire. • Valid driver’s license and proof of car insurance.

Wages - $11-$13/hr depending upon experience/28hrs per week.
