Green Empowerment seeks PT Office and Accounting Specialist

Green Empowerment is seeking a part-time Office and Accounting Specialist for its downtown Portland office.

About Us--Green Empowerment is a Portland-based 501©(3) public charity.  For over ten years, we have partnered with rural communities and nongovernmental organizations in the developing world to build renewable energy and water systems to alleviate poverty and improve the environment. We currently work in five countries and have to date improved the lives of over 209,000 people by helping bring community-based energy and water to rural villages.  Our core values are social justice, sustainability and local leadership.

The PositionTitle: Office and Accounting Specialist

Supervisor:  Executive Director, with coordination and support of Resource Development Coordinator

Schedule: Flexible Status: Part-Time (10-15 hrs/wk)

Remuneration: $10-11.00/hr DOQ

Position Summary:  The Office and Accounting Specialist will work with the Resource Development Coordinator to maintain Green Empowerment's financial and donor records and ensure the organization's smooth and efficient operation in order to better achieve its mission. Aspects of this work include but are not limited to the financial records, individual donor database, office support, and outreach endeavors.

Responsibilities and Tasks ­ * Ensure that financial transactions are recorded and reconciled in QuickBooks on a timely basis­ * Update cash flow spreadsheet on a monthly basis and review with Executive Director ­ * Keep consistent backup financial records­ * Help prepare financial information for independent auditor on an annual basis­ * Prepare useful financial reports for Executive Director, Staff and Board­ * Assist with organization's annual and project budgeting ­     *Handle donation income, including preparation of receipts and thank you letters;­ * Maintain and update donor database, contact lists and online listserve­ * Assist with public relations, such as development of media lists, drafting and proofreading press releases, contact with local media, and other activities as assigned ­ * Perform general office tasks as needed (answer phones, order supplies, etc.)­ * Lead occasional financial training sessions with NGO Skills interns

Qualifications­: HS diploma or equivalent­. Prior experience with nonprofit fund accounting, please; ­ Familiarity with and affinity for Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), the World Wide Web, QuickBooks or other major accounting program, and FileMaker or commensurate donor database­; Familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures of budgeting and financial reporting within not-for-profit organizations. ­ Please be well organized, detail oriented, and in possession of the tenacity to follow through on details and meet deadlines in a dynamic, splendidly tumultuous environment.
