JHC: Outreach and Education FT AmeriCorps

Josiah Hill III Clinic has the following opening:

Full Time AmeriCorps Position:  Outreach and Education Coordinator

Duration:  12 month term.  Anticipated start date November 2008. 

Stipend/Benefits:  Medical coverage and a $11,400 annual living allowance is provided. 

Education Award $4,725 education award upon completion of 12 month term.

About the Position:  The Outreach and Education Coordinator will assist with our healthy homes projects, toxin reduction project, and lead testing clinics.  Josiah Hill III Clinic’s programs assist families in identifying potential in-home health hazards and then links families with resources to address, or prevent, the hazards.  Health hazards found in and around our homes include lead, chemicals, mold and mildew-all of which can lead to or exacerbate health issues such as lead poisoning and asthma, especially for young children.  The Outreach and Education Coordinator will support healthy homes expansion into the Centennial School District area (east Portland around SE Division and 182nd) as well as our healthy homes and blood lead testing projects within the Portland Metro area. 

Main duties and responsibilities include:

Outreach & Education

-Conduct educational outreach at school and community events (i.e. back to school nights, community fairs, family or faith events,)

-Educate families about toxins found in and around our environment

-Provide outreach and education in a welcoming, accessible, and culturally appropriate manner

-Inform families about Josiah Hill III Clinic services

-Maintain spreadsheet of efforts including number of outreach events, number of in-person connections, etc

-Educate community members about ways to become involved with the organization i.e. volunteering, community leaders, donate, etc.

 Civic Engagement and Leadership Development

-Assist in recruiting a diverse group of community leaders through JHC outreach and/or partner referral

-Recruit students from local universities and colleges 

-Assist in developing culturally appropriate materials for trainings

-Assist in coordinating and conducting community trainings to recruited leaders on environmental health, healthy homes, and environmental justice topics

-Provide recognition to volunteers and leaders

Direct Service

-Provide healthy home checkups/indoor air quality assessments as needed

-Assist at blood lead testing clinics  

-Follow-up with families and school staff on resource and referrals

Resource & Fund Development

-assist in leveraging project resources as requested

-attend fundraising events

The ideal candidate will have the following skills/attributes:

-flexible to meet community needs and timeframes

-personal or professional experience with the Russian or African American community a plus
