A typical day would involve a majority of time staffing a public service desk, answering informational questions, explaining library policies and applications, helping people find good books to read, serving the information needs of children and teens, and helping people use the public computer stations. Other tasks might involve outreach to the community, teaching public computer classes, working with volunteers, and performing other duties to support the work of the branch or section. Library Assistants may be responsible for assisting with programming or special activities. Others may provide support for internal library processes such as Technical Services and Selections and Cataloguing.

Library Assistants act as the person in charge in the absence of a manager and must remain calm under pressure and respond appropriately when issues arise.

Salary / Pay Rate:$18.30 to $22.52 per hour

Required Skills and Abilities:This position requires a minimum two years of customer service experience involving direct contact with the public. A minimum of two years of post-high school education from an accredited college or university with major coursework in library science or a closely related field such as liberal arts.
Qualifications:A track record of delivering outstanding customer service in a library setting; experience providing information and referral services to the public; and at least one year of lead, person-in-charge, or supervisory experience preferred.
