position summary:

Cascade AIDS Project (CAP) is the oldest and largest provider of HIV prevention, education, housing, advocacy and support services in Oregon and Southwest Washington. We are seeking two committed and passionate Youth Advisory Council Leaders to create and facilitate youth action councils within eight (four each) high school School-Based Health Centers in the Portland-Metro area. The Youth Advisory Council Leaders will work collaboratively with Cascade AIDS Project, the Multnomah Youth Commission, and School-Based Health Center Outreach staff to organize youth advisory councils within School Based Health Centers; the youth advisory councils will promote School Based Health Center Services, conduct peer education and outreach within their communities, hold health and awareness fairs within each school, and conduct numerous other creative outreach projects within their schools under the coordination of the Youth Advisory Council Leader; the goals of the youth councils are to increase awareness and access to each School Based Health Center. These positions reports to the Youth HIV Education Coordinator at Cascade AIDS Project and are an AmeriCorps HOPE member positions. These positions begin September 1st, 2010 and end July 31st, 2011.

Minimum Qualifications:
• GED or High School Diploma
• 1-2 years experience working with high school aged youth in group settings
• 1-2 years experience organizing youth around outreach efforts such as peer education presentations, community events, etc.
• Successful experience working with ethnic, racial, economic and sexually diverse populations
• Group facilitation and public speaking skills
• Strong understanding of adolescent health information and School Based Health Center Services
• Demonstrated computer and keyboard proficiency using Microsoft Office software (word, excel, outlook), Macintosh Computers, and working knowledge of the internet.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience facilitating groups on health education.
• Experience working within Portland Public Schools, specifically with the School Based Health Centers
• Successful experience working in youth-adult partnerships.
• Successful experience recruiting, training, and managing youth volunteers
• Bilingual

Compensation: These are AmeriCorps HOPE service member positions; they will receive a $1,100/month stipend for 11 months of service, plus health care benefits, student loan forbearance, a childcare supplement, and an educational award of $5,350 upon successful completion of the term of service (each position).
