Volunteer Kickoff Celebration - Paws To Freedom

Paws to Freedom Service Dog Team Training Program, a 501(c) 3 non profit organization,  is hosting a Volunteer Kickoff Event. We are gathering current Volunteers, New Volunteers and those interested in finding out more about Paws to Freedom at a fun, relaxing and informative Volunteer Kickoff.

Our all-volunteer program welcomes everyone to come together with teamwork in planning for the growth of Paws to Freedom and the success of the Service Dog Teams in Training! Together we'll plan the next six months.

We even have volunteer opportunities that are "virtual".. do them from home on your computer!So come and join the fun, find out what we're about, and help us celebrate ALL volunteers--past, current and future!

Introduction to Vertical Farming

March 9th at 6:30PM near downtown Portland

As part of his AmeriCorps year, Justin Davidson has created a presentation on Vertical Farming - growing crops indoors within a several story building using techniques such as hydroponics.

The purpose of this Community Action Project is to start a discussion about Vertical Farming and to rally together those who are interested in bringing sustainable agricultural alternatives to Portland.

Sing Karaoke to Benefit Affordable Housing Wednesday!

Voicebox Karaoke, Portland's only private-room karaoke spot, is hosting a fundraiser this Wednesday, the 25th, for Bike & Build, a nonprofit that organizes cross-country bicycle trips to benefit affordable housing groups. For $7, anyone can sing unlimited karaoke between 5 - 10 p.m., and all proceeds go towards supporting affordable housing through Bike & Build. Bring friends and stop by for this great deal for a great cause!

The City Repair Project Visioning Session

We invite you to participate in an exciting event to envision how City Repair can move our work to the next level. Honoring what has been, and realizing the potential for what may be, we're inviting all City Repairers, new and old, to join us for a day of vision and strategy in which we will seek wisdom and guidance for the future. Please join us on Sunday, March 15th from 10am to 6pm, at the City Repair Headquarters, 3125 E. Burnside. We’ll be working to gather lessons from our past, and to make plans for our future. From now till March 8th, we seek written feedback regarding the legacy of City Repair, where it is now, and visions for the future. Call for Artists - Leave No Plastic Behind Exhibition

The 5th 'Leave No Plastic Behind' exhibition Call for Artists: Encouraging Community Leaders, Local Celebrities to take the three-month-long Plastic Free Challenge.

Exhibit Dates/Location: During the month of June at S.C.R.A.P., 2915 NE MLK

The theme is "United" and we're encouraging participants to make a 12 x 12" square to eventually be connected to others. Live plastic free for three months, keep the plastic you accumulate anyway, and make art out of it! Please email Cheryl for an application which contains further specifications.

Oregon Council for the Humanities seeks proposals for its new interactive, facilitated conversation program

Oregon Chautauqua, a popular speakers bureau of the Oregon Council for the Humanities (OCH) that has reached statewide audiences for twenty-eight years, has been transformed into The Conversation Project: A New Chautauqua, which connects Oregonians with public scholars and provocative ideas through idea-driven dialogue.

OCH invites scholars who live or work in Oregon to submit proposals for the 2009–10 Conversation Project. The Request for Proposals may be downloaded at www.oregonhum.org or requested by e-mail from Program Director Jennifer Allen at [email protected]. The postmark deadline for submission is March 16, 2009.

Oregon Chautauqua will finish out its current season on August 31, 2009. The Conversation Project season will begin on November 1, 2009.

Keep Hillside Park Pesticide-free

Please join us at our next work party and help keep Hillside Park pesticide-free!

Saturday, February 28, 10:00 until noon (Fourth Saturday of every month) Hillside Park (653 NW Culpepper Terrace)

We will be replacing the use of pesticides by weeding in the park. Tools, snacks and gloves will be provided. Families are welcome.

Founded by volunteers in 1998, The ReBuilding Center is the nation’s largest non-profit reuse center for salvaged construction and remodeling materials.

The Rebuilding Center of Our United Villages will be hosting an "after hours" volunteer group on Tuesday, March 3rd, 6:00-8:30. We will be working in the warehouse to organize inventory and make the place look lovely and "shoppable." We really need some extra hands, so please come and bring a friend...or five!
