PSU Sustainability Pledge: Adding the Social

PSU is putting together a sustainability pledge for the campus. We want to include the social element of sustainability since most pledges focus only on environmental or economic sustainability. This gathering will develop some actions or behaviors that students, faculty, and staff can pledge to adopt to make PSU and Portland a more socially sustainable, fair, and equitable place for all. Led by Emily E. Bowling, Graduate Assistant for First Year Experience, Office of Residence Life, and Noelle Studer-Spevak, Sustainability Manager, FADIM, PSU.

Friday March 13, 2009 from 2-3pm Portland State University Smith Memorial Student Union Room 294 1825 SW Broadway Ave.

Contact Marion Sharp at sharpml.pdx.edu for more information.

Jump Start The Economy!

March 21st, 2009, is Jump Start the Economy Day. If every adult in the US spends at least $5 extra on 3/21/09, 1.2 billion dollars will be added to the economy. People are really stressed and worried right now; this small step would show that we are all in this together, and that we can make a difference. For the biggest impact, the extra money should be spent as locally as possible, and preferably on something intangible, like a service.

Pay someone else to mow your lawn; leave a bigger tip at the restaurant; get a manicure; if you usually just buy a cup of coffee, get a muffin with it. There are lots of ways to spend the money, but for the greatest impact it needs to be EXTRA, something you wouldn't normally buy.

Oregon Food Bank seeks volunteers to work with at-risk youth in the garden!

Oregon Food Bank is currently recruiting volunteers for the Cultivating Community program. The Cultivating Community program brings together ‘at risk’ youth and caring, trained adults to work in the Learning Garden, increasing the self-esteem and capacity of the youth to provide for themselves. In this mentorship program, youth from metro-area agencies work alongside trained community volunteers in the garden. Through the Cultivating Community program the youth learn personal responsibility and accountability and become integrated into the community through service. It’s a lot of fun!
