Movies and Meaning Group "Gran Torino"

The March 19 movie this month will be "Gran Torino". The movie stars Clint Eastwood in a role that is two parts Dirty Harry, one part Grumpy Old Man, and one part Gandhi. The movie also plays with the idea of the "Christ figure," a theme you will find in many American movies (see "The Big Lebowski" and "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial"). The movie addresses issues of race, multicultural communities, violence, compassion, and even the doctrine of atonement. See http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081217/REVIEWS/812179989  for a fuller review.

Film: A Farm for the Future - Wed 7pm

"This documentary from the BBC is one of the most impressive things I’ve seen on TV for a long time. Highly recommended."  Realising that all food production in the UK (and the US) is completely dependent on abundant cheap fossil fuel, particularly oil, she sets out to discover just how secure this oil supply is and how to make a farm for the future.

Wildlife film maker Rebecca Hosking investigates how to transform her family's farm in Devon into a low energy farm for the future, and discovers that nature holds the key.
