Restoring Integrity to Oregon's Initiative System

City Club of Portland Friday Forum, March 27

Oregon’s initiative system is an integral part of the state’s political process, providing recourse to Oregonians when legislators are unwilling to take action on critical issues. But making law by ballot leaves few opportunities for effective compromise, often negatively impacts the state’s financial health and sometimes burdens the constitution with essentially statutory material. Placing initiatives on the ballot has also become a big business, with out-of-state interests spending considerable money on efforts to gather initiative petition signatures and influence the outcome of state elections.

Sustainability and Emergency Management - Wed 7pm

http://portlandpeakoil.org/content/sustainability-and-emergency-management

Start: Mar 25 2009 7:00 pm

Sustainability, Permaculture, Climate Change, Peak Oil… it is surprising how many interests intersect with Emergency Management.  Diverse disciplines from Sociology to Geology play a role in disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery.  Reaching out to audiences who may not otherwise be engaged in Citizen Corps programs is as easy as focusing on our shared goals.

20 minute walkable or bikeable neighborhood communities, have been the determinant for CERT Teams.  This model corresponds very well with sustainable development, the ideals of Permaculturalists and Peak Oil/Transition Town participants.

Ready to Rent Class Reminder

Just a reminder for individuals seeking Ready to Rent classes. Please do not contact the Portland Housing Center. They do not keep a list of Ready to Rent classes. If your clients are looking for a class they should go to www.housingconnections.org or call 211. These are the only two resources for a general list of classes. By giving clients the "right source" the first time, it decreases their frustration in accessing housing.
