LWV: Candidate Forum for Portland Public School Board Candidates

Candidates for Portland School Board to Appear at League of Women Voters Forum April 16

Thursday, April 16, 7:00 pm

Board Room, Blanchard Building, 501 N Dixon, Portland

The League of Women Voters of Portland and community partners present a forum for candidates for the Portland School Board. All candidates for each office have been invited to participate. The forum will be moderated by the League of Women Voters of Portland.

School Board candidates invited to participate include:

The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

15 Ways to Honor Trees for Earth & Arbor Month

This April, Portland metro area residents will honor trees for Arbor and Earth Month at 15 events that Friends of Trees is joining community partners to host. The events span the month of April, which includes Oregon Arbor Week from April 6 to 11, Earth Day on April 22, and National Arbor Day on April 24.

Friends of Trees wraps up its neighborhood planting season this week with more than 2,680 street and yard trees planted in Portland, Gresham and Vancouver neighborhoods since November — 47% more trees than last planting season.

The Third Conference on Klamath-Siskiyou Ecology

The Deer Creek Center for Field Research and Education, the Siskiyou Field Institute and Southern Oregon University are pleased to announce the Third Conference on Klamath-Siskiyou Ecology: "Sustaining Biodiversity in a Changing Environment" May 28th – May 30th, 2009 in Selma, Oregon. This conference will bring together scientists, resource managers and engaged citizens to discuss the scope and consequences of environmental change in the ecologically diverse Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion.

Birdsongs at Whitaker Ponds

Join David Helzer, with City of Portland Environmental Services, for an early-morning birding hike around Whitaker Ponds Nature Park.  Learn about the birds that utilize the Slough and work on your birdsong ID skills.  Bring your binoculars!  Trip meets at 7am and last 1-2 hours.  Pre-registration is required.

Volunteer Mandarin and Russian Translators Needed

Interested in helping out local seniors?

Friendly House Senior Program is looking to add to our network of volunteer translators and interpreters. We are currently looking for people with ability in translating documents into Mandarin Chinese and into Russian, and also for some folks able to do occasional interpretation.

The mission of Friendly House Senior Program is to help seniors remain living independently in their homes for as long as it’s safe for them to do so. We focus on the needs of seniors in Northwest Portland by providing case management, information and assistance, an activities program, and other support services.

Volunteer in the kitchen at Outside In!

Outside In is looking for volunteers to prepare and serve meals for our youth. Help ensure our clients receive healthy meals, provide a welcoming environment and have fun! Additional duties include helping to organize kitchen on delivery days and assisting with dishwashing and clean up.

Shifts available: Monday 8:30am – 10:15am, Wednesday 3:30pm – 6:15pm, Thursday 8:00am-10:15am, Sunday 11:30-2:45pm, Sunday 3:30pm – 6:15pm.
