Coffee and Conversation Networking Nights Monthly get-together for mid-career professionals and anyone in transition who is interested in meaningful (paid and unpaid) work to discuss a topical theme, brainstorm ideas, network with peers and share resources.

Parent and Child workshop: Planning a Dinner Garden

MONDAY May 4th (SE) and SATURDAY May 16th (NE) Growing Gardens is offering “Planning a Dinner Garden” as part of our Parent and Child Workshop series.

Parent and Child Workshops are designed to spark interest in gardening for children aged 6 to 12 while providing fun ways for parents (aunts, uncles, guardians, grandparents, neighbors) and children to grow gardens together.

Parents and children will learn how to plan pizza, salsa and salad “dinner” gardens. We will learn about the parts of the plants we use in these meals, when to plant our favorite vegetables and how to transplant new plants from the nursery or home.

We've done some cleaning around our offices, and have found ourselves with a superfluous four drawer metal filing cabinet. It has a locking drawer and is available for free. All you have to do is come pick it up.

Trainings

Reduced Registration Price for Ready to Rent Instructor Training!

Thanks to a generous and creative funding source, we are able to offer the Ready to Rent Instructor Certification training at a reduced price with a limited number of spots. The first 15 paid registrants will only pay $250 instead of the regular price of $450. There training is limited to 35 people so register TODAY! The next Certified Instructor Training will be held June 2-4, 2009.

This three-day training will equip agency providers with the necessary tools to successfully guide clients through the Ready to Rent process. The training consists of an interactive, participatory learning environment that will stimulate thinking, encourage growth, increase knowledge, enhance teaching skills, and motivate attendees to provide clients with a life changing learning experience.

Summer Volunteer Opportunity for High School Students

Students currently in 8th-12th grades are invited to volunteer as an Assistant Counselor for the Friends of Tryon Creek State Park Nature Day Camp this summer.

Assistant Counselors work closely with a designated Instructor and the Day Camp Director to help children ages 4-12 have a wonderful week in the woods of Tryon Creek State Park. We are looking for responsible, fun, creative people who enjoy the outdoors and are willing to learn.

Typical duties include the following:

• Assisting with arts and crafts, songs and skits

• Helping guide hiking groups

• Assisting in setting up activity stations

• Assisting in teaching activities

• Helping instructors manage groups of children

Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization’s (IRCO) David Douglas Mentoring Project (DDMP) is seeking energetic volunteer mentors interested in supporting  elementary and middle school students who would benefit from interactions with a caring adult.

 

DDMP is a one-on-one mentoring program that matches a student from the David Douglas School District with an adult mentor from the community.  Students selected for the program are those with highest needs (low academic performance, behavior issues, language and cultural barriers) and could benefit from having a positive role model.

Interested in helping out local seniors?

Friendly House Senior Program is looking to add to our network of volunteer translators and interpreters. We are currently looking for people with ability in translating documents into Mandarin Chinese and into Russian, and also for some folks able to do occasional interpretation.

The mission of Friendly House Senior Program is to help seniors remain living independently in their homes for as long as it’s safe for them to do so. We focus on the needs of seniors in Northwest Portland by providing case management, information and assistance, an activities program, and other support services.
