July 4 Inter-Dependence Celebration

In honor of Inter-Dependence Day, Living Earth’s First Friday will be SATURDAY, July 4.

Living Earth’s seventh annual Inter-Dependence Day Picnic, will be at Laurelhurst Park, 4:00-7:00 pm, near the entrance at SE 35th/Oak St, mid-way on the south side of the park.

See www.livingearthgatherings.org for more info. Join us to celebrate community and cooperation, with no bombs bursting in air, just a good old-fashioned potluck in the park. Bring a potluck dish, your own plate/utensils, musical instruments, a chair or blanket, etc. (plz leave spirited libations for other occasions) and share the spirit of summertime community, creativity, cooperation, and peace on July 4.

AFS Intercultural Programs is a not-for-profit, multi-national, non-governmental organization dedicated to peace through the promotion of worldwide intercultural learning and living experiences, primarily for high school students.

A Field Recruiter’s primary responsibility is to recruit high school age participants to go on AFS study abroad programs through educational and informative classroom presentations. Field Recruiters serve as representatives of AFS-USA and work closely with staff members of AFS-USA.

Salary / Pay Rate:$200 weekly base, plus pay-on-performance bonuses (potentially totaling up to $4350 over the fifteen week period).

This full-day workshop will begin by showing exactly what makes up a perfect garden soil for growing sturdy, healthy plants that lets gardeners avoid pest and disease problems. We'll look at the key players in fertile gardens: the marvelous creatures that build our soil, and we'll learn how to keep them happy and abundant. We'll also see how to make great compost, and cover many other techniques for soil building, such as sheet mulch, compost teas, cover crops, and more.

Permaculture Workshop with Toby Hemenway: Designing a Food Forest – Sunday, August 2

Learn from world-renowned permaculture expert Toby Hemenway at Tryon Life Community Farm’s inspiring sustainability education center! Food forests are life-filled places that not only provide food for people, but habitat for wildlife, carbon sequestering, biodiversity, natural soil building, beauty and tranquility, and a host of other benefits. This workshop will cover the basics of designing, planting, and maintaining a many-layered woodland garden of fruit and nut trees, perennial and annual vegetables, and flowers.

Volunteering

Calling all Computer Geniuses and Art Gurus!

VOZ Workers’ Rights Education Project is looking for volunteers to educate others and strengthen our programs as teachers for our Art Classes and Computer Classes. Right now we are vamping up to re-start these exciting new classes and we need enthusiastic volunteers to help us out.

Computer Classes: Held twice a week, from 3:30 – 5:00pm, at the VOZ office, these classes facilitate learning of computer skills for the day laborers. Come help these folks learn how to search for jobs, write a resume, and communicate with family across the world. Volunteers must have some knowledge of Spanish and computer literacy.
