There are three dancing events coming up this weekend.

Friday night is the first ceili of the season, saturday afternoon Alicia Guinn will be teaching a sean-nos dance workshop and starting this Sunday there will be a weekly sean-nos dance class and set dance class.

The Portland chapter of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is accepting applications for our Fall Economic Development Local Grants cycle. You can find information at our new website: www.archdpdx.org/jprespect.

The application deadline is October 15th.

CCHD Local Grants fund or support economic development institutions that are smaller in scope or are in the early stage of development. Economic development projects assist poor and low-income people to develop new businesses and create new jobs.

The Northwest Service Academy is looking for a variety of rewarding service opportunities in the Portland Metro Area for groups of five to ten AmeriCorps volunteers on October 24th, 2009—National Make a Difference Day.

Make a Difference Day is an opportunity for NWSA members to collaborate with new organizations and engage their communities in novel and exciting ways. Creative and nonstandard proposals are encouraged, but all projects should be aligned with at least one of NWSA’s core missions to build community, address human needs, and work for the betterment of the environment.

Mount Hood Community College ESL Teaching Volunteer Opportunity

Volunteer to Teach English to Adult Refugees and Immigrants! Hello! Mount Hood Community College (MHCC) runs a volunteer-based English as a Second Language (ESL) program at several satellite sites in Gresham and we need you! We need volunteers to teach beginning and intermediate English classes. Students are international young adults to seniors, and class size runs from 5 to about 15. Volunteer teachers usually commit to twice a week for at least one term, but once a week is also welcome! The majority of our students are Spanish speaking, but we also have students from all over the globe. Students are enthusiastic and eager to learn, very appreciative and welcoming! Our volunteers often return term after term because the work is very rewarding.

Teach in a Remote Area of Tanzania & Experience Maasai Culture

Make a difference in the lives of underserved children in Tanzania by teaching at Orkeeswa Secondary School. Experience life in a traditional Maasai community and explore Tanzania.

Lake Oswego-based Indigenous Education Foundation of Tanzania (IEFT) operates Orkeeswa Secondary School in the rural village of Lashaine in northern Tanzania. The school is located in a predominantly indigenous Maasai community and strives to preserve the cultural traditions and beliefs, while providing its students with affordable, accessible education.

Volunteer this Saturday on the SOLV Clean and Green Project!

When: Saturday, October 10th, 2009, from 9am-1pm

What: Join SOLV and roughly 1,000 volunteers at over 20 project sites in Washington County and East Multnomah County on Saturday, October 10th from 9 am to 1 pm. Volunteers will plant thousands of native plants, remove litter and graffiti, enhance school grounds, and work to restore wetlands and streams in an effort to restore their communities.
