Openings at Mother Earth Kindergarten and Faery Garden Nursery

These all-outdoor, 'bio-immersion' early childhood programs acknowledge and nurture the inherent connection that the human being has with the rhythms of the Earth and the cosmos.  The children participate in gardening, food preparation & preservation, caring for farm animals, natural handwork & crafts and forest exploration.  These experiences teach sustainable practices as the children learn to care for themselves, each other, and the world around them.

Volunteering

Fun Volunteer Opportunities at Bike Event!

Volunteers are needed for the 7th annual Harvest Century Presented by Showers Pass on Saturday, October 10, 2009. The Harvest Century is a non-competitive bike fundraising event to benefit Community Vision (CVI). Now celebrating 20 years, CVI provides direct, one-to-one support to individuals with developmental disabilities in Oregon. Last year, this event raised over $25,000 and had 1050 participants. Organizers expect more of everything this year and they need 100 community volunteers to register participants, load trucks, cut hundreds of bagels, drive support vehicles, stuff goody bags, and much more. Volunteers receive a commemorative t-shirt, snacks, and a great time!

Tutoring youth in low-income housing complexes

The YWCA LearnLinks program will be hosting a volunteer orientation Thursday Sept 24th from 6:00-8:30pm at our downtown YWCA on 1111 SW 10th. Volunteers can get involved in our program by becoming a tutor/friend to a student residing in a low-income housing complex. Activities include cooperative games, assistance with homework completion, fun, energetic learning games that promote enthusiasm for building academic skills and positive supportive relationships, and educational, enriching service learning projects. Tutoring sessions run M-Thurs from 3:30-5:30pm at four different locations in SW and Outer SE Portland. We only ask volunteers to commit to one session a week. Just two hours a week can make a big impact on a student's life.
