Last Chance to Take Advantage of the Diversity Scholarship to NOVAA's Conference

NOVAA is inviting volunteer administrators from organizations that serve underrepresented populations, and volunteer administrators from diverse backgrounds, to apply for a full scholarship to the 2009 NOVAA Conference: In Our Own Backyard. The conference will take place on November 4, 2009 at the Oregon Zoo, and includes workshops on Managing Difficult Behaviors of Volunteers; Coaching - Pursuit of Excellence in Performance; Recruiting and Retaining Young Adults; and Diversity - Organization Readiness. October 13th - InFARMation (and Beer!): Eating Local for Thanksgiving and Winter, Planning Ahead

What does eating local in our state look like after the rains start and most of the farmers’ markets shut down for the season?  On the agenda: suggestions of how to “localize” your Thanksgiving will be given by farmers who can help,  CSAs who can creatively help consumers make the harvest last through the gray months, where you can find the few farmer's markets that are open year-round and what you can expect to find there, and tips on planning ahead which will make your food values and convictions easier to hold to once winter is here.

Portland Mercury Charity Auction

It's almost that time again: the annual Mercury Charity Auction is coming right up!

Last year we raised $16,000 for the Portland Women's Crisis Line. In others years, we've raised money for Sisters of the Road, Resolutions Northwest and JOIN. So the big question is: what Portland nonprofit deserves to receive a giant box of money under their nondenominational holiday tree this year?

Asian Pacific American Network of Oregon (APANO) is a non-profit organization formed in 1998 to mobilize social, cultural, and political strengths of the diverse Asian and Pacific Island Americans of Oregon through policy advocacy and community organization.

The organization is in the process of applying for 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 tax-exemption status under the Internal Revenue Service. Within the next year, APANO expects to undertake major growth in its scope of operation from a budget of less than $20,000 a year from several small grants and donations to potentially $50,000 a year.

Position Summary: The Internship Program (IP) Leader will assist the IP Coordinator in supporting approximately 25-30 IP members who serve government, nonprofit and educational organizations in Seattle, Central Washington, the Oregon Coast and the Columbia River Gorge. As the IP Leader, which will occupy up to 65% of the person’s time, duties include serving as a liaison between Mt. Adams staff and AmeriCorps members, assisting members with field projects and outreach events, planning trainings, retreats and producing a monthly newsletter. This position requires travel as the IP Leader will visit each IP member at their project site a minimum of two times throughout the year.

Sustainable Travel International (STI) is looking to hire an Administrative Assistant to play a vital role in supporting and maintaining organizational growth.

Russian Leaders' Visit to Portland to be Posted on League Website

The League of Women Voters of Portland will be hosting a delegation of five Russian government officials from October 10 through 18. The delegates work with housing administration and communal services in the municipalities of Russia. The goal of their visit is to learn about accountable governance.

Free Construction Labor for Your Non-Profit--January

As part of our Trades and Apprenticeship Career Class, Oregon Tradeswomen, a local non-profit, provides free classroom instruction, field trips and hands-on training for women to help prepare them for living wage careers in the construction trades and new green economy.  In order to train our women, we do construction projects in the community and have worked with several non-profits on projects ranging from bookshelves to building and sheetrocking walls.

The concepts behind high performance wall and roof assembly and construction are now within the reach of all builders and remodelers. Participants in this interactive, hands-on workshop will learn the facts about building high performance walls and roofs. The class includes demonstrations of two of the most common and successful wall assemblies: continuous exterior insulation and staggered stud framing. Students will learn principles that can be applied to existing homes and new construction projects, including wall design, product selection, staging, construction, and pricing. (300)

What you need to know to gain tax exempt 501(c)(3) status from the IRS: a workshop sponsored by Springboard Innovation and ShoreBank Pacific.
