InFARMation (and Beer!) Nov 10th - Hunger, Poverty and Food Policy

November 10th – InFARMation (and Beer!): Hunger, Poverty and Food Policy – Building a Local Food System that Works for All

What is the state of hunger and poverty in Oregon?

How can we build an equitable local food system?

What are farmers doing to address these issues?

Join us for a discussion about these issues with Oregon Food Bank and Gaining Ground Farm.  Oregon Food Bank recently conducted its annual Voices Project – a series of focus groups held at emergency food sites throughout the state.  OFB will present the results of these conversations and what they tell us about the state of hunger and perceptions about community food systems.

Volunteering

Become a CASA Volunteer and Change the Life of an Abused Child

Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA's, are ordinary men and women from all walks of life, educational levels, and ethnic backgrounds, who volunteer to serve as an advocate for an abused child or sibling group who lives in foster care under the protection of the Juvenile Courts in Washington and Multnomah Counties.

When a CASA is court appointed to a case, he or she becomes the one person in the foster child's life who will be there from when the case opens to when it successfully closes.

The CASA is responsible for gathering information, and coordinating as many elements as possible, in order to secure for each child a safe, permanent home as quickly as possible.

Clark County Holiday Drives

Many people want to help others at the holidays but are unsure how. Or they think that what they can afford to do won't make a difference. Point them to the listing of Clark County Holiday Drives for food, toys, clothing online at the Nonprofit Network site. A dozen groups online now, more coming. Each group's description and list of client needs tells a story (oatmeal and other basic food for home-bound seniors; stuffed animals for children clients of a mental health program; arts supplies for a teen shelter). A great place for businesses to find a group they can help as well. Some nonprofits also need volunteers to help with sorting and wrapping presents. http://nonprofitnetworkwa.org/
