Social Policy Implications of Incarceration and Public Safety | Diversity Leaders Network

Presenter: David Rogers, Executive Director, Partnership for Safety and Justice

Date: November 18, 2009

Time: 8:00 - 9:30 am, networking until 10:00 am

Oregon’s prison population has grown dramatically over the past fifteen years. This has led to a massive increase in state spending on prison construction and operation. Oregon now has the dubious distinction of being one of only four states in the country that spends more money on its prison system than on higher education. Even more alarming is that this shift has been at the expense of the very programs proven to reduce crime at a fraction of the cost.

Q & A

I need/want an executive level nonprofit mentor

I am a June 2007 MPA graduate from PSU in need of an executive level nonprofit mentor who can help me gain some clarity on how to gain career track footing in the nonprofit sector given my variety of paid, intern, and volunteer expriences to date.

I have about two and-a-half years of varied paid experience (project management, grantwriting, admin support, and more)and lots of knowledge about and passion for anti-poverty and social justice/equal rights work.

Please contact me at [email protected] with "Mentor offer" in the subject line if you have time or know someone who does.

With sincerest gratitude,

Tamara Bertell, MPA

Volunteering

Accounting & Finance Volunteer Sought

Tryon Life Community Farm, an urban sustainability education center in SW Portland, is seeking a patient, numbers-loving volunteer to join our finance working group!

Specific duties we are looking for the volunteer to take over involve monthly reconciliations and reporting, as well as assistance in the yearly budgeting process and general knowledge and awareness of the finance system and how it works.  Hours per month commitment ranges from 3 to 10, generally.  While some background in bookkeeping, finance or accounting is useful, we are willing to train anybody who is enthusiastic and committed.  Note that we are a consensus-run, open organization, and we are totally excited to work with you.

L'Arche Housing Community needs Electrical Help

Hello, my name's Bernie Herberholt and I am a member of L'Arche Nehalem. I'd like to send a request out over the digest.

L'Arche Nehalem is a Portland housing community of people with and without developmental disabilities sharing in life together. One of our adult foster care homes in SE Portland has been moving to convert it's garage into a living space.

Our community is looking for an electrical subcontractor who can help us finish a small amount of electrical work for our garage conversion project.

We are looking for a contractor to donate 2 hours of their time to install a hard wired smoke detector and switch box for our 501(c)3. Other electrical work has been completed recently.

Please contact Bernie @ (503) 351-6680 or call our office @ (503) 251-6901.

Stewardship Saturdays at Tryon Creek

Stewardship Saturdays

Every second and fourth Saturday of the month 9:00am to 12:00pm

Second Saturdays are always ivy pulls and fourth Saturdays may be trail maintenance during the fall and winter.

Ivy pulls:

Pull together to remove invasive English ivy and to protect our forest.  Ivy out competes our native plants, takes over the forest floor, shades out trees and ruins precious habitat.

Trail Maintenance:

Work with other volunteers to maintain trails and keep them safe and clean. Projects may include digging out paths for rain water, spreading gravel and clearing culverts.

Dates:

November 14th Ivy pull

November 28th Ivy pull (work off that Turkey)

Where: Nature Center at Tryon Creek State Park

Plant Trees with SOLV in the Tryon Creek Watershed!

Plant Trees and help restore the Tryon Creek watershed at St. Nick’s Church in SW Portland at SOLV’s Team Up For Watershed Health site on Saturday, December 5th. Plantings start at 9 am, end by 12 pm and SOLV provides tools and gloves. By planting native trees and shrubs, volunteers will be lowering stream temperatures and creating an ecosystem that will filter polluted stormwater runoff, improve water quality, provide better habitat for wildlife, and be more resilient to climate change.
