Four Candidate Forums Organized by League of Women Voters

In April, the League of Women Voters will present forums for candidates for Metro Council President; Multnomah County Board Chair, Sheriff, and Commissioner for District 2; and City of Portland Commissioner Positions 2 and 3. All candidates for each office have been invited to participate. All forums will be moderated by the League of Women Voters. Each event is free, and the public is invited to attend.

All four forums will be recorded and aired on local access cable television with the assistance of Portland Community Media and Metro East Community Media. A schedule of replays of each forum will be posted on the League’s website (www.lwvpdx.org).

Attention Birders: Bird Restricted Parts of Clark County!

Do you want to take your birding to another level?  Can you identify birds by sight and sound?

The StreamTeam is looking for intermediate to advanced birders to collect important data on breeding bird populations in Clark County.  Join a network of birders that assess local bird populations!

Breeding Bird Orientation will be held on Saturday, March 27th for interested birders to learn how to collect data, visit sites and be a part of this effort!

Monitors make their own schedule within set protocols.

Powering the Future: Where Will Energy Come From?

Some claim that the United States is already fully equipped to power itself through alternative energies such as personal solar panels and rooftop wind. The only thing preventing this, they argue, is the political and financial power of “big utilities.” Others contend that alternative energies are expensive, intermittent and not as “green” as their proponents claim, and moreover, that the current technologies are insufficient to generate the necessary amount of power. But who is right?

Summer LINKS position at Columbia Slough Watershed Council

The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is now accepting applications for a Community Outreach Specialist, an AmeriCorps LINKS position for summer 2010.  The Specialist will assist with event planning, manage volunteers, and lead canoeing trips.  The position is approximately 20 hrs/wk, from mid-May through mid-August, with flexible scheduling.  A $600 stipend will be paid in three monthly installments of $200 each.  For more information about the Council and the position, please visit:

The Indigenous Education Foundation of Tanzania (IEFT) (www.ieftz.org), a non-profit organization that collaborates with local communities to provide quality, affordable secondary education to under-served indigenous children in rural Tanzania, has an opportunity for an Office Manager to support the organization in operating Orkeeswa Secondary School starting in June 2010. The Office Manager will live and work in northern Tanzania and as a member of IEFT’s Administrative Group carry out financial, administrative and human relations functions of IEFT and Orkeeswa Secondary School.

Bring your YOUTH out to the FARM!

Tryon Life Community Farm is a non-profit 7-acre sustainability education and demonstration center on the edge of Tryon Creek State Park in SW Portland.

TLC Farm's Hands-On Sustainability program engages youth from preschool through college in interactive farm tours and hands-on activities and lessons in topics such as: -gardening -permaculture -natural building -restoration -medicinal plants -forest ecology -storm water management and more!

We are currently recruiting school and youth groups of all kinds to sign up for farm visits for the upcoming season.

Classroom Assistants in SUN Community Schools with Impact NW

SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) Community Schools are located in Multnomah and Washington Counties and are designed to transform schools into community learning centers and promote student achievement and enrichment through greater neighborhood involvement. They provide educational, recreational, social and health services, serving a wide age group from preschoolers to seniors in high school. We are looking for groups or individual volunteers to help students with homework, teach a class or assist with after school activities or events.

Location: Volunteers are needed throughout several schools in the Portland area. Currently our greatest need is at King School, 4906 NE 6th Ave Portland OR 97211.
