Michael Armstrong from the City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development will review Portland's past and current efforts to reduce fossil-fuel use and carbon emissions and describe upcoming initiatives. In 1993, Portland became the first city in the U.S. to adopt a climate-protection plan. In the years since, Portland has implemented significant policies and programs and seen promising results, with local carbon emissions now at 1990 levels. At the same time, there's much more we need to do, and large challenges lie ahead.

Documentary short on non-profits/gentrification in NE

Moving In: A Non-Profit Feminist Bookstore and the Politics of Place Documentary short directed by Dawn JonesCome to a documentary screening about In Other Words Books and Resources and their move into NE Portland. Learn about the history of the space, and how a non-profit feminist bookstore both contributes to and ultimately challenges racial tensions and gentrification issues in NE Portland.

There will be a panel following the video including Annie Allen from the Albina Women's League (the owners of the building); Amara Pérez and Sue Burns from In Other Words Books and Resources; Allyson Spencer, a longtime resident of NE that attended the Albina Arts Center; and Jeana Woolley, developer and consultant to the Albina Women's League. Facilitated by Roslyn Farrington.

Volunteer Manager

Position Title: Volunteer Manager

Status: Exempt

Position Summary: The volunteer manager is responsible for creating and implementing a statewide volunteer plan and campaign to meet SMART’s annual volunteer goals. A key component of this job is to work closely with field and development managers to determine appropriate volunteer goals, strategies and action plans for each area. The volunteer manager will also work closely with the marketing/PR manager to develop and promote appropriate volunteer tools, resources and messaging.

Restoration Project Manager

The Restoration Project Manager (RPM) will work with the Watershed Council and council staff to identify and implement restoration projects that will help to improve the overall health of the watershed. Restoration projects will focus on protecting and restoring creek corridors and wetlands. The RPM will work closely with public and private property owners to both develop and implement on-the-ground projects (60%). The RPM will work with monitoring staff to determine appropriate monitoring requirements for projects (20%). The RPM will work with the Coordinator to review available information about the watershed; identify additional restoration needs; and develop long-term project priorities for the watershed (20%).

Columbia County Weed Control Coordinator

The Columbia County Weed Control Coordinator will coordinate weed control activities within Columbia County through work with three county watershed councils, spray crews, and the Soil & Water Conservation District Manager to track spray sites, number of control years, and effectives. The position will be responsible for incorporating new sites into the database and coordinating spray activities accordingly. The Control Coordinator will assist with project specific weed control outreach and development including grant research/writing and coordinating education programs, presentations and workshops.

The Companion Program Seeks Social/Recreational Companions

The goal of the Companion Program is to encourage independence and healthy lifestyles by providing 1:1 support to individuals with disabilities who want to participate in social/recreational activities and establish natural supports in their own communities. Based on each customer’s individual goals and interests (such as making friends, participating in new recreational activities, or learning a new skill), Companions provide the needed support for the individual to be successful and become better self-advocates. Whatever the activity, Companions will ensure that the person they are working with has an enjoyable and empowering experience.

CCHD Community Organizing Grant Applications Due April 7th

The Portland chapter of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development is accepting applications for our Spring Local Grants cycle. The application deadline is April 7th.   CCHD Local Grants fund grassroots community organizations who are focused on the systemic causes of poverty, and who address institutional change, not just individual change. People living in poverty must have the dominant voice in the organization - 50% of the board must be from the low-income community being served, and leadership development must be available to all low-income participants.
