Growing Seeds for Your Garden and Community

Join us THIS SATURDAY for a seed saving workshop co-sponsored by the Northeast Portland Seed Library, with Rachel Freifelder of Handmade Gardens

 

Saturday, October 9th--- 2PM to 4PM @ 4446 NE Going St.

 

(Optional) Group Bike Ride from Northeast Portland Tool Library(NE 20th @ Killingsworth) to workshop: 1:15 PM

 

Learn to grow and harvest your own vegetable seeds and plan your garden for seed growing. Which vegetables are easiest to grow to seed? How can I know if my seed will breed true? How do I choose the best individual plants to save seed from? When do I harvest my seeds?

KBOO Boo Bash 2010

KBOO Community Radio is happy to announce the return of the Boo Bash, a Halloween fundraiser for the station. All proceeds from the event will benefit KBOO Community Radio.

 

The Boo Bash will feature local bands and KBOO DJs. The bands include, Dusu Mali Band, SweetJuice and a surprise headliner that will be announced on 10/24. The djs include, DR J, DJ ManRich, DJ Sesqui, and DJ Anjali & the Incredible Kid, all of whom are KBOO volunteers.

 

There will also be a costume contest, so come dressed to impress. KBOO would like to welcome the The Greater Portland Area Costumers Guild (GPACG) as the offical judges for the contest. The catergories will be: Couples, Fantasy, Scariest, Funniest, Historical and People's Choice.

Candlelight Vigil in Remembrance of teen victims of homophobic bullying - Monday, Oct 11, 7:00 pm

Pride Northwest Sponsors Vigil against Teen Bullying on National Coming Out Day

 

October 5, 2010, Portland OR – Pride Northwest will be sponsoring a candlelight vigil to raise awareness of the harm caused by sexual orientation-related bullying. The vigil will take place in Pioneer Courthouse Square on Monday, October 11 at 7:00 pm, to coincide with National Coming Out Day. The Board encourages all those concerned about these tragedies to participate.

The Multnomah County Library's Title Wave Used Bookstore has a plethora, an overflowing cornucopia even of Books on Tape and Books on CD and Book and Tape combos. Prices start at 25 cents, October 11 through October 30, or while supplies last, all of them are on sale at 55% off their normal price. The Membership Manager is responsible for managing donor contact through direct mail, e-blasts, web content and donor events as well as managing the telefunding phone campaign. Responsible for meeting annual fundraising goals for Membership ($600,000 in FY11; approximately 2,000 donors.)

Duties and Responsibilities

• Design and implement overall annual fund strategic plan for general members (individuals giving between $1-$1,999 annually) focusing on donor retention and acquisition.

Cuba AyUUda Seeks Communications & Social Media Intern

The Social Media Intern will be responsible for Cuba AyUUda's email account, social media outlets (facebook, website: www.cubaayuuda.org, etc), assisting with new social media, and creating promotional material for our bi-annual fundraising events.

 

The intern must be proficient in writing, communications, and basic graphic design. In addition, this person will be savvy with social media and have excellent computer skills. As a 'voice' for Cuba AyUUda, the candidate must also possess at least a rudimentary understanding of the political history of Cuba and must be able to stand behind the work Cuba AyUUda is doing.

Workshop: Communities Creating Change 10/28/2010

In addition to our core curriculum, the “Foundations Business Course”, Mercy Corps Northwest (MCNW) offers an array of topic-specific seminars to the general public. These seminars allow students to dig deeper into specific business topics, and choose the class that is most relevant to their needs. Past volunteers have taught seminars on a wide range of topics, including: Social Media Marketing, Legal Risks of Business, Sole Proprietor Taxes, Branding 101, Retail Leasing, Marketing on a Shoestring, and more.

OMSI Vernier Technology Lab Internships in Evaluation and Exhibit Development

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is seeking two interns in the Vernier Technology Lab: an Evaluation Intern and an Exhibit Development Intern. These are unpaid positions which offer the successful candidate a unique opportunity to be involved with evaluation and exhibit development at one of the nation's leading science museums. These positions are available immediately and will remain open until filled.

 

Vernier Technology Lab Interns assist in OMSI's Vernier Technology Lab, which informs OMSI visitors about Security, Robotic and Computer, Medical, Home, Green, and Aesthetic Technology through hands-on exhibits. The lab additionally provides private workshops on LEGO Robotics.

OMSI Visitor Study Volunteer Coordinator Internship

The Evaluation and Visitor Studies Department of the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is seeking a motivated individual to serve as the Visitor Study Volunteer Coordinator for the WAVES (Water Avenue Visitor Experience Study) project this fall. The project involves surveying visitors to learn more about their impressions of their OMSI visit(s). Information gathered from the surveys helps inform OMSI staff on how to enhance visitors' experiences and develop business practices that benefit the community. This is an unpaid internship position which offers the successful candidate the opportunity to be involved with data collection and analysis at a major non-profit organization.

Volunteers Needed at Family Bridge Shelter in Hillsboro

 

Do you enjoy children and want to help end homelessness? The Family Bridge shelter in Hillsboro ( www.family-bridge.org ) for homeless families with children needs volunteers for 2-3 hour shifts on weekdays and weekends. 

The next orientation and training is on Thursday, October 14 at 6:00 p.m .
