Fire Tower - Devils Peak Work-Play Party Friday, Oct 15th

Fellow Mt. Top Legacy Makers,

 

Join a group of Fire Tower lovers to preserve an unstaffed fire tower near Trillium Lake - Mt. Hood.

 

Meet at Zig Zag Ranger Station (or car pool from Portland) at 8:30am on Friday October 15th to transfer building supplies and gear to 4WD vehicles. Share vehicle expense. Bring wet and cold weather gear, food and sense of adventure.

 

Tools and supplies are being donated by volunteers.

Talk and Potluck: "Speeding the Pace of Progress for Farm Animals"

On October 17, Northwest VEG welcomes back Paul Shapiro, the Senior Director of the Campaign to End Factory Farms for the Humane Society of the United States. Paul will discuss the progress being made to combat factory farming and what we can do to continue moving the ball forward for farm animals. People who saw Paul at the 2008 Portland VegFest know that he is a great speaker, talking on an important subject. The talk will be at 6:30, and is preceded by the regular Northwest VEG vegan potluck at 5:00. Location: West Hills Universal Unitarian Fellowship, 8470 SW Oleson Rd., Portland. OMSI Volunteer Kitchen Assistant at Hancock Field Station Outdoor School Site

POSITION SUMMARY: The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is seeking a Volunteer Kitchen Assistant to help at Hancock Field Station from October 18th – 21st (Monday- Thursday). Hancock is one of OMSI’s outdoor school sites and this week needs extra support in the kitchen to provide for a larger than average outdoor school group. The volunteer will have the opportunity to explore the camp grounds: over ten acres land situated in the center of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument near Fossil, Oregon.

OMSI After School Club Volunteer (Alternating Wednesday Afternoons)

POSITION SUMMARY: The After-School Club Volunteer will help OMSI Outreach staff offer fun, hands-on science learning experiences to elementary and middle school students. After-school clubs meet for hour-long sessions once per week, however, this position is an alternating week commitment.

 

Currently, a volunteer is needed to assist with the after-school club every other Wednesday afternoon at the French American International School in Northwest Portland for the remainder of the school year. The club meets from on Wednesdays from 3:45 - 4:45 p.m. Typically OMSI is onsite for a half hour before and a half hour after each session, setting up and tearing down. Transportation can be provided to and from the museum.
