Social Media: Exploring Opportunities and Making Informed Decisions
Presenter: Ash Shepherd, Technology Associate, TACS
Date: June 11, 2009
Time: 8:00 am - 12:00 pm
Are you overwhelmed or intimidated by social media opportunities? Not sure what options exist, what they do, and what it means for your nonprofit? Join TACS Technology Associate for an in-depth look at what social media looks like in the nonprofit sector, and find out what you need to know to make informed decisions.
We’ll explore:
- Setting a Context: What do we mean by “Social Media”?
- What are the major tools nonprofits are using?
- Case study examples of how social media is being used successfully
- What should you consider to determine if social media is right for your organization or if your organization is right for social media?
With a hands-on approach, Ash will demonstrate how to use the more popular social media tools, and explore the implications of “opening up the conversation” and the potential issues that can arise. You’ll find out about what things you should consider when choosing how to engage in social media activities, and leave with an understanding of how social media can fit into your organization’s communication plan.
* Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop so they can participate in a number of working social media examples throughout the session.
Ash Shepherd is a Technology Associate with TACS/NPower Oregon and true friend of the “Accidental Techie”. With 10+ years working in the nonprofit sector, he has a clear understanding of the challenges organizations face and strives to help them find realistic solutions.
