Northwest Housing Alternatives: Resident Services Coordinator

Northwest Housing Alternatives (NHA) is a large nonprofit that creates opportunity through housing. NHA provides a wide range of affordable housing options for Oregonians with low incomes including families, seniors and people with special needs.

NHA offers Resident Services Coordination at several Portland metro-area affordable housing communities. We are now recruiting for a new position in our Resident Services department.

Position Description: Resident Services Coordinator NHA seeks a full-time site-based Resident Services Coordinator (RSC) to link tenants to services and resources at an affordable housing community in downtown Portland. Based on tenants’ needs and interests, the RSC will also recruit and develop relationships with community service providers; arrange trainings, information sessions and workshops; and organize social, recreational and other community-building activities. This RSC will primarily be stationed at a newly rehabbed multi-family housing property (90 apartments) that serves people with special needs and the elderly. All tenants pay only 30% of their income for rent and utilities.

NHA seeks an experienced and energetic self-starter ready for the challenge of helping link people to new opportunities! Application materials (see below) must be received by 5pm on Friday June 5, 2009.

Duties and Responsibilities 1. Establish contact with current tenants and welcome new residents. Explain the Resident Services program and the RSC role in linking tenants to information and local resources.

2. Identify, assess, select, develop and maintain referral partnerships with local social service and resource agencies to effectively and efficiently help residents achieve their goals.

3. Provide supportive links between residents and community-based social services when residents or agencies request assistance.

4. Determine community needs and interests and arrange trainings, information sessions and workshops; and organize social, recreational and other community-building activities.

5. Work in collaboration with asset and property management staff when a resident is in jeopardy of eviction. Offer links and referral support to maintain stable housing.

6. Establish resident services program targets. Track and measure program progress and identify opportunities for improvement. Analyze outcomes data to continually develop the program.

7. Build supportive professional relationships with tenants that help them enhance the quality of their lives and encourage them as they work toward self-sufficiency.

8. Work as part of NHA’s resident services team and in partnership with NHA asset management staff, other NHA staff members, property management staff and volunteers.

9. Help identify and attract new resources to fund the Resident Services department.

10. Complete other housing and resident related assignments as directed by the supervisor.

Knowledge, skills and abilities • Bachelors degree in a related field • Passionate about helping people overcome barriers to success • Minimum of 2 years experience in resident services or social service required • Minimum of 2 years experience working with special needs populations required (people with mental health issues, a history of substance abuse, and/or physical disabilities) • Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills • Ability to communicate well with people of all different ages and walks of life • Skilled at working in partnership with NHA staff, staff of other agencies and volunteers • Independent, self-starter, creative and resourceful • Willing to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends • Valid drivers license, good driving record and own vehicle with insurance desired • Computer skills including Word and Excel
