Join us for this month's Springboard Social Innovation Forum!

When: Wednesday, June 10, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 Where:Urban Grind Coffeehouse in NE, 2214 NE Oregon Cost: $5.00 at the door. Light supper included.

June's Forum defines sustainability in a new way. We address how nonprofit change organizations can be sustained through earned income strategies. We will offer an exemplary panel of nonprofits who operate with sustaining strategies. And, an attorney will be on the panel to answer the nitty-gritty questions about how. Come learn how to launch a sustainable nonprofit, or increase your organization's sustainability.

* Chris Bekemier, Our United Villages How is Our United Villages sustained by The ReBuilding Center? How are these two efforts connected and what can you adapt and adopt for your own organization?

* Amy Sacks, Pixie Project The Pixie Project operates with other nonprofit partners, runs a store, and has launched a new line of related specialty products. How can a nonprofit do this and remain a nonprofit?

* Cynthia Cumfer, Attorney at Law, Community Development Law Center What are the legal implications of this kind of nonprofit organization? Cindy will help answer the tricky legal questions we raise while sharing the models of the Pixie Project and Our United Villages.

We’ll start with asking each panelist to describe their specific organizational model, then they'll answer the following questions. Then, it’s your turn! * What do you think of when you talk about sustaining the good? * What are the benefits and trials of sustainable nonprofit models? * What are some examples of how to create sustaining strategies if you’re a nonprofit? * What are the legal and financial implications?

(1) Workshop: Nonprofit Sustaining Strategies and the Law - Cynthia Cumfer, Nonprofit Attorney. How does a nonprofit launch specialty products, buy a building, or have a store? Are these legal activities for nonprofits to engage in? What else is possible for sustaining nonprofits? How do you plan and report these activities? Get your legal questions answered in this hour-long workshop.

(2) Workshop: Creative Approaches to Developing a Sustaining Strategy - Laura Mansfield, gameplan Come hear from a successful social entrepreneur who now helps organizations develop strategies for success. She'll share her story and provide ideas for developing new ways of thinking about your organization's strategies for long-term viability.

(3) Workshop: Identify Assets for New Income – Amy Pearl, Springboard Innovation and Elizabeth Moreno. Learn to do an “Asset Inventory” of your organization’s value, and how to capitalize on it for income. This effective practice allows you to explore potential value you might not have otherwise noticed. We’ll work through a framework to get you thinking about new strategies for income generation. And, this includes your current supporters--they are existing assets too! We'll talk about how to ensure they are a part of your sustaining strategies.
