Executive Director for The Pacific Environmental Advocacy Center - Job Opening

The Pacific Environmental Advocacy Center (PEAC) serves as the domestic environmental law clinic for Lewis & Clark Law School and provides pro bono legal representation for environmental organizations in the region. PEAC maintains a collaborative, educational and synergistic relationship with Lewis & Clark Law School faculty, staff and students; in exchange, the Law School contributes to PEAC’s budget and provides office space, technology and some administrative support. However, the majority of PEAC’s budget is self-funded through grants, gifts and attorney fee awards. In order for PEAC to manage its growing docket and maintain financial stability, it is critical that PEAC engage in ongoing fundraising, strategic planning and sound organizational development. The Executive Director at PEAC will be responsible for most administrative operations of the organization including planning, budgeting, fundraising, marketing, public advocacy, systems design and management, and advisory board development.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Implement the policies and mission adopted by the PEAC staff and advisory board; promote a positive and rewarding work environment for all

- Ensure the recruitment, retention and supervision of productive, professional advisory board members who will participate in the development and delivery of long-range strategies and fundraising activities for achieving PEAC's mission

- Supervise all fiscal and budgetary activities; develop and maintain sound financial practices; prepare and review budgets; manage income/expenditure accounting and reporting; and prepare and present monthly financial reports to the staff and advisory board

- Solicit sufficient financial and in-kind support from individuals, foundations, businesses and other sources for the continued operation of PEAC; independently design, implement and monitor an annual development plan outlining fundraising goals, activities and timeline for completion

- Manage internal and external written communications regarding administrative and resource development operations; update PEAC's website; produce newsletters and/or updates; execute necessary legal documents; conduct official correspondence

- Manage grant writing efforts; author proposals; maintain agreement documentation to ensure fulfillment of terms including receipt and expenditure of funds; design and monitor an annual grant making schedule; ensure all grant applications are completed in a timely manner; conduct ongoing foundation/donor research, and process and steward all gifts

- Manage the development, planning, delivery and debrief of PEAC fundraising and alumni events; supervise PEAC staff and volunteers involved in supporting the events; manage the database of all PEAC constituents and ensure that attendance and donations are tracked

- Supervise the internal processes at PEAC related to recruitment, employment and release of personnel, pursuant to the Law School's human resources policies and procedures, and in consultation with the PEAC Clinical Director and Law School Natural Resources Associate Dean; develop formal job descriptions and ensure regular performance evaluations are held

- Serve as the primary spokesperson for PEAC in the community and, in consultation with the PEAC Clinical Director, within the Lewis & Clark College and Law School communities; cultivate exceptional relationships with foundations, individual donors, alumni, community partners, faculty and staff; liaise and work closely with Lewis & Clark College and Law School departments, including natural resources, resource development, IT, alumni relations and business services

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

- Bachelor's degree

- At least five years experience in nonprofit organizational management

- At least three years of fundraising experience, including major gift solicitation, grant writing, research and development planning; familiarity with local, regional and national funding sources

- At least two years of experience in organizational budget management

- Paid or volunteer experience that demonstrates a commitment to environmental protection and/or improvement

- Exceptional interpersonal skills; must be collaborative in nature

- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including a willingness and ability to solicit major gifts face-to-face with potential donors

- Strong project management, administrative and organizational skills

- Thorough knowledge of nonprofit principles, practices and laws

- Proficiency in Word, Excel, Raiser’s Edge, and Adobe Acrobat Professional

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

- J.D. and/or Master's degree in nonprofit management, environmental studies, English or communications

- Specialized fundraising skills in developing and managing events, marketing campaigns, planned giving programs, giving societies and monthly donor campaigns

- Board development and training experience

- Knowledge of environmental issues and related laws; demonstrated ability and willingness to advocate for environmental protection and to increase public awareness of related issues

- Proficiency in Adobe InDesign, LiveWhale (or other website management system), Google Calendar, Constant Contact, and Foundation Directory Online

PLEASE NOTE:

PEAC’s current Executive Director will assume a new role titled PEAC Clinical Director once this position is hired.
