Job Announcement: Finance & Accounting Supervisor

Position Title:          Accounting Supervisor

Department:            Finance Department

Reports to:               Finance Director

FLSA Status:           Exempt

Salary:                      $46,500

SUMMARY:

For two decades, Human Solutions has been working to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty by empowering families and helping them become self sufficient.  Our comprehensive programs have been designed to give people the skills and resources they need to be successful.  Our programs include developing affordable housing, offering social services, employment services, energy assistance and homelessness prevention.  

Our well-functioning nonprofit organization is growing and its funding sources and accounting requirements have become more complex.  The Accounting Supervisor position is responsible for daily operations of the Finance Department.  Responsibilities include supervision of accounts payable, accounts receivable and payroll functions, management of the general ledger, month end close, and preparation of financial statements. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned:

·        Monitor daily operations of the agency’s Finance Department.

·        Oversee and direct the payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable functions performed by Accounting Specialists.

·        Prepare and review journal entries, monitor transactions, investigate unusual activity, reconcile balance sheet accounts, and resolve differences.

·        Oversee monthly and year end closing process to ensure completion within specified time frame.

·        Review and record monthly activity for managed low income housing properties; maintain agency’s investment in tax credit partnerships.

·        Prepare monthly financial statements; analyze and evaluate agency and program financial statements to identify errors, and trends.

·        Manage the general ledger accounting system, including account structure, budgets, and reporting functions.

·        Work closely with Finance Director to ensure proper and timely recording of financial transactions in accordance with GAAP and funder requirements.

·        Assist in preparation of annual budget.

·        Provide financial information to management and other internal and external customers.

·        Assist with budget and audit preparation.

·        Maintain fixed assets and prepaid assets schedules.

·        Document and implement policies and procedures related to job responsibilities and department workflow.

·        Identify weaknesses in internal controls or procedures and recommend corrective action.

·        Provide backup and support to Finance Director.

·        Cross-train on AR, AP and Payroll to learn department processes. Provide backup if necessary.

·        Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise Accounting Specialist II (Accounts Payable and Payroll) and Accounting Specialist III (Accounts Receivable), including reviewing invoices, payables, payroll, journal entries, and account reconciliations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

·        Four year degree in accounting with at least 3 years work experience in accounting, preferably in a nonprofit organization.

·        Prior supervisory experience.

·        Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting methods, practices, procedures, policies and processes.

·        Knowledge of low-income tax credit partnerships desirable.

·        Strong organizational skills and attention to details.

·        Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

·        Intermediate knowledge of Excel; proficient in Word and other MS Office applications.  Extensive experience with computerized accounting systems, knowledge of Sage MIP Fund Accounting a plus. 

·        Excellent customer service skills to external and internal constituents.

·        Able to work independently with minimal supervision and follow tasks through to completion.

·        Strong verbal and written communication skills.

·        Valid driver’s license and car

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

·        Must be able to read, write and speak English both in person and by telephone. Ability to read and interpret accounting regulations, contracts, insurance policies and other complex material.  Ability to produce written financial narrative reports for a variety of audiences.

The ability to understand the effect of individual accounting entries and decisions on the financial statements taken as a whole is essential.  Must be able to prioritize and work under demands of short time lines.  The individual must possess the ability to reason logically and methodically.
