Background

The Johnson Creek Watershed Council is seeking a dynamic Volunteer Coordinator to coordinate its volunteer program. The Johnson Creek Watershed Council is one of the strongest watershed councils in the state, consistently receiving an “excellent” rating from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board.  The Volunteer Coordinator will have the opportunity to work in a team environment with a talented staff, an active board, and a diverse group of volunteers to protect and restore one of the most densely populated watersheds in the state of Oregon.

The Johnson Creek Watershed is located on the east side of the greater Portland metropolitan region. Johnson Creek originates in Clackamas County and flows westward 26 miles to its confluence with the Willamette River in the City of Milwaukie. It provides habitat for endangered coho and chinook salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat trout. The watershed encompasses approximately 34,000 acres or about 54 square miles. The drainage basin includes several jurisdictions including Portland, Milwaukie, Happy Valley, Damascus, Gresham, Multnomah and Clackamas Counties, the Clackamas Soil and Water Conservation District and the East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District.

The council’s offices are located in Milwaukie, near the southern edge of Portland’s Sellwood neighborhood.   The staff currently consists of an Executive Director, a Community Outreach Coordinator, a Restoration Coordinator, a part-time Education and Research Associate and a part-time Outreach Associate.  The Volunteer Coordinator will work with all staff, most closely with the Community Outreach and Restoration Coordinators.

Position Summary:

The Volunteer Coordinator’s primary goals will be 1) To strengthen JCWC’s capacity to utilize volunteers effectively by developing formal volunteer program processes, and 2) To develop and facilitate varied year-round volunteer opportunities to enable more people to become involved in the Johnson Creek Watershed and the Johnson Creek Watershed Council.

The Coordinator will work to develop and support meaningful volunteer opportunities at all levels of the organization with strategic focus on turning casual participants into committed long-term volunteers.   His / her work will be both proactive and responsive.  (S)he will actively recruit volunteers from target constituencies (i.e. watershed businesses, minority groups, neighborhood associations) with whom the JCWC wishes to build closer relationships.  (S)he will work to increase JCWC’s capacity to accommodate volunteers who approach JCWC with unique needs and / or skill sets.

The JCWC views its ability to provide meaningful volunteer opportunities as a way to magnify its positive impact on watershed health and also as the centerpiece to a “friends-building” strategy that will expand its circle of supporters and hence, contribute to the long-term organizational health of the Johnson Creek Watershed Council.
