Finance & Operations Director

The Freshwater Trust (TFT), a 26 year-old non-profit conservation group with a mission to preserve and restore freshwater ecosystems, seeks a dynamic Finance & Operations Director. With a $5+ million (and rapidly growing) annual budget, staff of 24, and four primary programs, TFT is a smart, innovative organization seeking practical solutions to water conservation.

The Finance and Operations Director will serve as a member of the senior management team and help lead the organization to the next level.

DUTIES INCLUDE: • Monitor daily operations of the Finance & Operations Department. • Oversee and direct the payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable functions performed by the TFT bookkeeper. • Prepare monthly financial statements; analyze and evaluate organization and program financial statements. • Manage the general ledger accounting system, including account structure, budgets, and reporting functions. • Prepare annual budget. • Provide financial information to management and other internal and external customers. • Audit preparation. • Document and implement policies and procedures related to organizational workflow. • Identify weaknesses in internal controls or procedures and recommend corrective action. • Support grant efforts (budget preparation, reporting, invoicing, etc.). • Annually review insurance and benefits. • Oversee general operations (vendors, equipment/office needs, review and adjustment of management systems, etc.). • Oversee special projects & initiatives. • Supervise TFT bookkeeper. • Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: • Four year degree in accounting or related field, with at least 5 years work experience in finance, preferably in a nonprofit organization. CPA preferred. • Prior supervisory experience. • Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting methods, practices, procedures, policies and processes. • Strong organizational skills and attention to details. • Strong analytical and problem solving skills. • Intermediate knowledge of Excel; proficient in Word and other MS Office applications. Extensive experience with computerized accounting systems (TFT currently uses QuickBooks). • Excellent customer service skills to external and internal constituents. • Strong verbal and written communication skills. • Ability to read and interpret accounting regulations, contracts, insurance policies and other complex material. • Ability to produce written financial narrative reports for a variety of audiences.

REASONING ABILITY: The ability to understand the effect of individual accounting entries and decisions on the financial statements taken as a whole is essential, particularly on how these statements reflect organizational posture to supporters and members of the general public. Must be able to prioritize and work under demands of short time lines. The individual must possess the ability to reason logically and methodically.
