Associate Teacher

Founded in 1930, Friendly House, Inc. is a private, nonprofit neighborhood center and social service agency located in Northwest Portland.  Friendly House Preschool serves children ages 3-5 and their families, who pay on a sliding fee scale or are subsidized through the Oregon Prekindergarten Program (OPK) or City of Portland Children’s Investment Fund.  The preschool is one of five programs at Friendly House.

SCOPE OF THE POSITION

The associate teacher will work with both the morning and afternoon classes.  S/he will work directly with each classroom’s head teacher to develop curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and flexible to meet the needs of individual children and the group.  The teacher will facilitate daily classroom maintenance, preparation of activities, and weekly changes of the classroom environment.  

Essential Functions

Work with teaching team to plan and implement developmentally appropriate, anti-bias curriculum which meets the needs, abilities, and interests of participating children. Maintain responsibility for daily classroom setup and cleanup. Ensure that preparation of materials needed for weekly lesson plans is complete. Assist with recording of regular observations of children engaged in a variety of activities. Share responsibility with head teachers for monitoring the physical and mental health status of the children. Assist in the preparation of breakfast and snacks.

Qualifications

AA degree or two years post-secondary education with some course work in ECE or related field, CDA certification preferred.  Must have one year experience in an ECE setting.  Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred.  Must be enrolled or able to enroll on the Criminal History Registry. 

Interpersonal Contacts

The teacher will have daily contact with a diverse group of children and their families.

Job Conditions

This job is performed at Friendly House Activity Building, and the outdoor areas surrounding Friendly House, including local parks and libraries.  The teacher must have the physical ability to participate in the activities of the program. The ability to lift children is required.

Compensation. 

This position is 36 hours per week, 9 ½ months.  Salary is $10.95 per hour.  Health benefits, paid vacation and sick leave.  Staff training budget and paid training time.  A membership in the Friendly House Community Center is given to all Friendly House staff members.
