Portland, OR - - - - - El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is a holiday that has its roots in Mexico, and is also celebrated in the United States. Mexicans react to death with mourning along with happiness and joy. They look at death with the same fear as any other culture, but they reflect their fear by acknowledging and recognizing that death exists. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have passed. The celebration occurs on November 1st and 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting the resting place with these as gifts. If you would like to remember the passing of someone with us we encourage you can bring a picture or item by which you remember the person that has passed and place it at the altar during the event. We hope to see you there!
