BACKGROUND: Students come to the Madison SUN Room and SUN classes to learn, have fun, and grow. Unfortunately, without parental support this can become challenging to students who might have to go home to babysit younger siblings or work to help support the family. Additionally, many of our families come from all over the world and language and cultural barriers keep them from participating in school activities.

TIMEFRAME: The SUN Program offers three, eight-week program periods. The Student Outreach Specialist would be responsible for attending monthly PTO meetings in the evenings and work in the SUN Room Monday through Thursday for a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Additional one-time-only volunteer opportunities may be available for school wide events, fairs or parties and may occur outside regular SUN programming hours or on weekends.

TASKS: Assist the SUN staff in bringing in students that would otherwise not participate or engage in school and community activities. Diversify the body of engaged students in the SUN program/events. Work in partnership with Site Manager and Extended Day Coordinator to plan and implement workshops and classes. Coordinate and teach SUN Pathways class - includes working with Site Manager and Coordinator to develop partnerships with local service programs and agencies for student service learning. Data entry etc....

VOLUNTEER PROFILE: Required Skills, Knowledge, and Characteristics: Ability and desire to work with students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Ability to use good judgment when working with youth in a school setting and with people from diverse backgrounds - considering cultural, religious and ethnic standards. Must be a high school graduate. Must be committed to the SUN Model - Schools Uniting Communities - and to the students. Experience working with high school age students (14-18).

Preferred Skills and Knowledge: A Self starter with experience engaging community members. Interested in continued commitment to and involvement with SUN - planning/implementing classes, etc. - in the future. Language skills in a foreign language - preferably Spanish, Somali or Vietnamese.

Additional information: Volunteers will need to have a background check completed through Portland Public Schools District Offices or through the Portland Police Bureau if working with students. Reports directly to SUN Site manager.
