position summary:

Oregon Parent Teacher Association, the state’s oldest and largest child advocacy organization has an immediate opening for a part time Executive Director.

OPTA Organizational Mission: To support and speak on behalf of children and youth in the schools, in the community and before governmental bodies and other organizations that make decisions affecting children; To assist parents in developing skills they need to raise and protect their children; and, To encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools.

Executive Director Role Summary: As directed by the Bylaws of Oregon PTA, the Board of Directors have the authority over the affairs of the Oregon PTA during the interim between conventions, adopts and/or amends Standing Rules, adopts the annual calendar or activities and annual budget as well as approving the formation of Standing Committees as recommended by the Executive Committee. As a membership organization, Oregon PTA has the sole authority to formulate policy.

The Executive Director shall provide leadership for the staff of Oregon PTA, effectively manage the business operations of the organization and is responsible for carrying out the policy decisions of the Board of Directors in accordance with the duties defined herein.

Key Relationships: Reports directly to the President of Oregon PTA by the authority of the Oregon PTA Board of Directors. Performance objectives are established and performance review conducted annual by the President of Oregon PTA with input from the Board of Directors. Directly supervises the Administrative Assistant and any other contracted or direct employee of Oregon PTA. Works closely with Oregon PTA Board of Directors, council leadership, committee chairmen, consultants and local unit PTA leaders, and has contact with other statewide educational and governmental organization and with the news and/or communications media.

Required Skills and Abilities:Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: •Good general understanding of budgeting procedures and non-profit financing operations •Has successfully written, been awarded and managed grants in support of non-profit programs and/or services •Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, board members, school officials, PTA officials and education organizations •Knowledge and experience with the Oregon Legislature or a state agency. Ability to effectively represent the views of Oregon PTA to elected and appointed state officials. •Demonstrates proficiency with electronic office tools, including but not limited to Microsoft Word and Excel, web site development and maintenance, web conferencing, file storage, wireless networks •Ability to evaluate a variety of information and make sound decisions regarding that information as it applies to Oregon PTA officers and members •Ability to exercise independent judgment •Able to communicate effectively verbally, and in writing. •Proficiency in a second language in addition to English is an advantage •Familiarity with the structure of Oregon Public Education is an advantage •Familiarity with the mission, objectives, bylaws and structure of Parent Teacher Organization is an advantage
Qualifications:Education, Experience, Training: •Bachelor’s Degree in business administration, public administration, education or related field or equivalent business practice certification training and/or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities •Completed training in professional business accounting software or experience in its use. •General familiarity with office software tools.
