POSITION: Volunteer Coordinator

PROGRAM: HomePlate

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

FLSA STATUS: Hourly, Approx. 15 hrs/wk, 10 months (longer with pending grant funding)

HIRING RANGE: $14.00-$15.00 per hour

START DATE: January, 2010

CLOSE DATE: December 28, 2009

HomePlate, a grass roots youth drop-in non-profit, established in 2005, offers hot meals, showers, resources, referrals, recreation, and positive interactions with adults. Located in Hillsboro and serving young people from ages 11–24, HomePlate provides services to nearly 300 youths per year. Our mission is to support the positive development of young people experiencing homelessness or housing in-stability through community building, education, access to services and resources, and youth empowerment. HomePlate successfully connects community members and at-risk youth together in relationship in order to engage youth towards meeting their education, housing, employment, medical, and dental needs, etc. We encourage you to visit our website at www.HomePlateYouth.com.

POSITION SUMMARY

Due to HomePlate being mostly volunteer run the HomePlate Volunteer Coordinator is needed to support, train, recruit, and orient HomePlate volunteers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Recruit, organize, and plan trainings for core volunteers.

• Train volunteers to:

o Build rapport with youth, find out needs, case plan and refer them to community resources

o Provide outreach to youth on the street

• Build community support by speaking to schools and community organizations about homelessness and poverty

• Provide weekly support and supervision for volunteers.

• Create a community engagement and volunteer recruitment plan

• Create a user-friendly volunteer orientation and training manual/plan

• Maintain meal schedule volunteer rotation

• Schedule volunteers, as needed, to ensure they receive maximum supervision and positive guidance with the youth

• Develop a simple tool or method to assess volunteer satisfaction and skill increase as a result of the orientation and training

• Develop a simple tool or method to assess youths' satisfaction with the volunteers

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

• Experience building trust relationships and collaborative efforts with diverse individuals and organizations

• Experience working with people experiencing homelessness or other similar personal challenges

• Experience working with youth and adults from a diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds and with disengaged populations

• Strong organizational skills; ability to organize & prioritize tasks, communicate clearly with team and volunteers both verbal and written

• Ability to work effectively with and support others in a team environment and independently

• Ability to pass a criminal background check

• Knowledge of at-risk youth needs and barriers

• Ability to work with or learn computer data entry programs and familiarity with Office Suite software. Fluency in social media websites, e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.

• Energetic, committed, flexible and innovative
