See the world premiere of AMERICAN SUEÑO at Milagro Theatre Jan. 15-23

Miracle Theatre Group is pleased to present the world premiere of “American Sueño,” an original, bilingual play created by Rebecca Martínez and Dañel Malán, directed by Rebecca Martínez with music by Joaquín López, and a proud participant in the 2010 Fertile Ground Festival.

“American Sueño” shares the stories of four marginalized individuals in search of their version of the American Dream: Augustín Obrero, a musician, and his sister Monica, who struggle between living with their family traditions and searching for new lives of their own; Mimi, a drag performer, who yearns to find true love, regardless of her gender identity; and the homeless Cruz, a mere shadow of a woman she once was, who searches for a way off the streets. To realize their dreams, they each must decide, “What am I willing to sacrifice in order to make my American Dream a reality?”

“American Sueño” plays for two weekends only: Jan. 15-23, 2010 at the Milagro Theatre (525 SE Stark St., Portland). Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m., with 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan 23. Tickets are $18-$20 ($14 for students/seniors) from 503-236-7253 or www.milagro.org. There is one preview performance at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14; all preview tickets are only $12. A complimentary post-play reception catered by La Bonita restaurant will follow the opening night performance on Friday, Jan. 15.

Special Event: A free, bilingual health fair, sponsored in part by Kaiser Permanente and presented by the Latino Sexual Health Coalition (Teatro Milagro, Multnomah County STD, HIV, HepatitisC Program, and Cascade AIDS Project) will provide visitors with bilingual health resources. The fair, which immediately follows the 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, Jan. 23, will also feature free blood pressure checks, massages, referrals, HIV tests, bilingual health screenings and other wellness activities and health-related gifts from representatives of An Sen Clinic, OHSU Latino Medical Student Association and others.
