OMSI Human Resources Intern

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) is seeking a Human Resources Intern. This is an unpaid position which offers the successful candidate a unique opportunity to be involved in human resources at a major non-profit. This position is available immediately and will remain open until filled.

Summary of Position: This internship position will aid the Human Resources staff in balancing the museum's strategic objectives with the everyday needs of the staff. The Human Resources intern will manage specific projects, conduct and present research and assist with general office duties in the Human Resources Department as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Develop and design a strategy to improve at least one program in one HR functional area. Potential projects may include organizational benefit and compensation programs, revising positions to meet FLSA criteria, management and leadership development and effective communication strategies.

For most projects, the intern will: - Conduct research on best practices. - Gather baseline data on employee satisfaction with current programs and assess employee needs. - Develop recommendations on improvements to be made based on research. - Develop an implementation plan for revised program. - Develop sustaining mechanisms to ensure ongoing viability of programs designed. - Generate comprehensive information on resources and contacts. - Develop, run, and analyze reports. - Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and referring qualified internal and external job applicants for all professional positions within the museum. - Assist the Human Resources staff in delivering staff orientations and training programs. - Perform general office duties, including scheduling, filing, writing and editing correspondence and maintaining the supply of HR and benefits materials. - Assume other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Human Resources Director.

Knowledge/Skills: - Working knowledge of Human Resources principles. - Knowledge of computers, including database systems. - Ability to maintain confidentiality. - Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. - Excellent organizational and time management skills. - Excellent customer service skills.

Education and Work Experience: - Recent graduates or students working toward a Bachelor’s degree preferred, with coursework in Human Resources. - Experience working in a professional environment and/or in a customer service role.

Commitment: 6 month minimum 16-20 hours/week
