Portland City Council Debate Council Seat 3

On April 23, City Club welcomes three candidates for Portland City Council seat number three: incumbent Dan Saltzman and his opponents Jesse Cornett and Mary Volm. The candidates will debate how each would address key challenges facing the city, ranging from public safety to high unemployment.

Jesse Cornett worked as District Assistant for Congressman Earl Blumenauer and most recently as Government Relations Director and Assistant to the President at Portland State University. He was the only candidate for City Council Seat 3 to qualify for public funding. In his current role as a City of Portland Commissioner, Dan Salzman oversees the management of the Portland Police Bureau, the Bureau of Environmental Services and the Portland Children’s Levy. Before joining the City Council, he spent five years as a Multnomah County Commissioner. Mary Volm worked for the City of Portland for the last twenty years as the Communications Director in a variety of bureaus. She is best-known for her role as the city’s spokesperson during major weather-related disasters.

If a candidate receives a majority of votes cast in the May 18 primary, that candidate will win this seat. If no candidate earns a majority in the primary, the top two contenders will advance to a runoff election in November.
