position summary:

This position is a full time salaried position with occasional evening and weekend hours, and some flexibility in schedule. The Career Counselor/Placement Specialist position is responsible for assisting women to make the trades a career including: screening candidates for OTI’s pre-apprenticeship; assisting women to develop a career plan; case-management; making the match between the women as employees/apprentices and employers/apprenticeship programs; and retaining women in trades careers.

Additionally, the Career Counselor/Placement Specialist builds relationships with a variety of union & open shop building, construction, utility, municipal and industrial employers and stays current with upcoming construction projects and apprenticeship openings. The Career Counselor/Placement Specialist travels throughout the Portland Metro area in order to meet with employers at their workplaces, and to follow up with program participants on their worksites. In addition, the position coordinates the class job site/apprenticeship center field trips. Salary is negotiable commensurate with experience.

Required Skills and Abilities:Responsibilities: Develop, maintain and document relationships with employers, apprenticeship coordinators, unions and industry associations. Assist students/clients with career planning, career development and job/apprenticeship application and placement so they reach their career goals. Place graduates and clients in jobs and training positions. Provide retention support services and problem solving to assure employment success. Maintain up-to-date information about local building, construction, mechanical, technical and utility trades labor market needs and trends. Travel throughout the Portland Metro area and work a schedule that includes some evenings and weekends.
Qualifications:Qualifications: Bachelors degree or equivalent experience. Minimum two years experience performing the duties and functions of job development, placement, retention and career advising, planning and development. Comfortable and respectful with people from all walks of life, i.e. class, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, legal history. Understanding of the building, construction, mechanical and utility trades. Computer skills including Word, Excel, e-mail and databases. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Effective planning and organizational skills. Results and outcome focused. Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize tasks and manage time. Ability to collaborate, be respectful and help others on a team. Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice and women’s empowerment.
