OEC seeks a communicator interested in pairing creative skills in the media arts with an interest in environmental education and advocacy. Our community outreach intern will work with the outreach director and environmental health program staff to develop multi-media projects to spread the word about connections between household habits and human health. Projects may include print materials, social networking programs like Facebook, video, photography, audio, and other multi-media projects that best match the skills and interests of intern candidates.

OEC’s outreach program strives to help individuals act on their environmental values in their roles as consumers, parents, heads of households and citizens. The goal of OEC’s community outreach is to turn personal action into support for public policies that will protect families from environmental harm. We provide tools for individuals to protect their own health and, in turn, we are creating a stronger grassroots base to build political power for OEC’s strategic goals.

General Responsibilities (to include, but not limited to): Collaborate with staff to understand Oregon Environmental Council’s environmental health program priorities and subject matter; Research community outreach needs and opportunities in key Oregon communities; Propose, design and develop a suite of multi-media outreach materials to meet OEC program priorities; Review materials with OEC partner groups and target communities, and revise materials to accommodate feedback

Qualifications: Ability to communicate and interact in a positive, professional manner with various populations such as community volunteers, middle school and high school students, business professionals, the general public, other potential project partners, and colleagues; Strong creative skills in one or more visual media platforms; Strong organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects without losing sight of the “big picture;” Ability to write and speak in a clear and compelling fashion; Self-motivation and initiative.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in environmental education, community organizing or social marketing a plus.
