'Educating Rita' is an incredibly smart, funny and touching story of an unconventional student, and a burnt out teacher who change each other's lives and minds in unexpected ways. This acting tour-de-force was written by Willy Russell and made famous by the award winning film with Michael Caine and Julie Walters.

Rita signs up for a course in English Literature, seeking inner growth. Frank takes on tutoring, seeking some extra cash to pay for his drinking. The two, like oil and water, have an immediate and profound affect on one another that no one could have predicted! Called “a marvelous play; painfully funny and passionately serious…” by the London Sunday Times, Educating Rita has clear ties to Bag & Baggage's emphasis on literature and our belief in celebrating the differences between people that make our lives rich. This play fits perfectly into what we're all about, and we think you're going to love it!

Educating Rita won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy in 1980, earned Willy Russell and Academy Award, Golden Globe award and BAFTA nomination for Screenplay in 1984, as well as awards and nominations for the cast of the film.

The Cast

FEATURING:

Maggie Chapin as Rita:

She burned up the stage inTaming of the Shrew & The Woman's Prize; lisped and fogged us into hysterics in A Christmas Carol, and brought us to tender tears in Death of a Salesman. Maggie is the heart and soul of our acting team, and this role is unlike anything you have seen her perform. We are thrilled to be able to feature Maggie in the wonderful role of Susan (who has decided to call herself Rita).

Tracy Conklin as Dr. Frank Bryant:

Playing opposite Chapin, as Professor Frank Bryant, is Bag & Baggage newcomer Tracy Conklin. Conklin has been a Portland - area institution for years, performing in dozens of successful shows throughout the region, including a number of leads for the now defunct Tygres Heart Shakespeare Company. Tracy also frequently acts in film. This is Conklin’s first show with Bag&Baggage. Already in rehearsals the interaction between he and Maggie in the two roles is amazing. Sparks are going to fly! Welcome Tracy!

The Crew

Patrick Spike - Director:

For the first time ever, Bag & Baggage is hosting our first Guest Director. Award winning director Patrick Spike (who played Lady Bracknel in our production of The Importance of Being Earnest last season, and who is now a member of our board of directors) will direct Educating Rita!
